On 13 January, the Vancouver School Board staff welcomed a delegation of primary and secondary school principals from Shenzhen Futian District, China. Vancouver was the third stop of their school district visits across Canada. David Derpak, the VSB’s District Principal – International Education, hosted the morning meeting.

This past December, the Lord Roberts Elementary Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) received an early Christmas present. Urban Fare came forward with a donation of $1000 per downtown store ($4000 total) to help build a new playground at the West End school.

Following the death of His Excellency Mr. Nelson Mandela, who passed away on December 5, 2013, flags on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments across the country, including the Peace Tower in Ottawa will be lowered to half-mast from sunrise to sunset on the day of the funeral.

Last week three Vancouver teachers including Margo Murphy - Culinary Arts teacher at Templeton Secondary, Gina Wong - Kindergarten teacher at Florence Nightingale Elementary, Peter Katsionis -  Social Studies Department Head at Churchill, and VLN Teacher as well as Janey Lee - Kindergarten teacher at Thunderbird Elementary were honoured by the Vancouver School Board for winning the 2013 Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence.

The Vancouver School Board is engaged in a process to re-vision the supports and services it provides through Inner City and CommunityLINK funding. Staff say the process requires the district to step back from the current models of resource allocation and ask broad questions about poverty and educational success.

In early November 60 students from across Metro Vancouver converged on Gladstone Secondary to take part in the Learning Partnership’s “It’s My Future” student consultation series. Students discussed issues ranging from the importance of student engagement to how school districts can better prepare them for the world of work.

A creek once ran from Kingsway to Great Northern Way. It has long since been covered over with asphalt. But that didn’t stop a group of ten Mount Pleasant Elementary students from Grades 5 to 7 from exploring the creek in their lessons about watersheds.

Eric Hamber’s Gym was awash in school spirit on Friday, September 20 as alumni, staff and students celebrated Hamber Spirit Day, Blue and Maroon Day, Clubs Day, Pep Rally, Football Game Season Opener and finally a Gym Dedication Ceremony and Homecoming Basketball Game.

The VSB had their biggest turnout ever for the Vancouver Pride Parade this August. Dozens of students, staff, trustees and parents donned pink shirts and hoisted a vast collection of colorful and creative signs.
