Recently the VSB's new draft social media policy has been getting a fair amount of media attention. The policy is aimed at providing employees with a clear understanding of the impact of using social media and its appropriate use.

Fleming Elementary will be inviting current students and older alumni to head back to school on Friday, May 31from 4 - 8 PM. In the early part of the evening, the school will host an Open House (from 4 -6 PM) which will include school tours,  displays and an assembly. A special Fleming video project, which was created by the entire student body just for this celebration, will be featured.

On Friday, May 3, students in grades 4 and 5 at Queen Mary Elementary School were experimenting with methods to clean water samples containing suspended particulate material. The week before, the classes had taken a field trip to Stanley Park where they got a first-hand look at the diversity of marine organisms in the intertidal zone.

Construction is currently underway on the Vancouver School Board's newest elementary school. After undertaking a public campaign to solicit ideas for the name of the new school, the Naming Committee recently announced the new school would be named Norma Rose Point School.

On April 29 the Vancouver Board of Education formally adopted a balanced Preliminary 2013-14 Operating Budget. The budget was the result of weeks of public consultation with stakeholder groups and the general public.

Yesterday evening, the Vancouver School Board senior management team released the revised preliminary budget proposals To review the proposals, click here. Over the next week, the Board will continue to review the preliminary budget proposals and listen to feedback from stakeholders.

It is budget time at the Vancouver School Board. Earlier this month, district staff brought their recommendations around budget to the Board. This morning, fresh from their successful performance this weekend at the B.C. Vex Robotics Championships at BCIT, a group of Gladstone Secondary students helped inaugurate a plan that will enhance career and training opportunities for young skilled workers interested in science, technology, engineering and math.

Gladstone Grade 11 student Carmen Cheung wasn't always set on graphic design. She says she got into it by accident in Grade 9 thanks to peer pressure from a few friends who encouraged her to give it a try. Since taking her initial Photoshop classes, Cheung says she's grown to love design.

Education Minister Don McRae presented three distinguished British Columbians with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal this Thursday in recognition of their service to the public education system in B.C.

Students, staff, VSB Trustees and BC Premier Christy Clark were on hand February 14 for the official opening of the district's newest $37.9-million secondary school. Following a series of speeches, the Premier conducted a town hall with 150 Grade 11-12 students.

The Vancouver School Board has submitted an $850 million capital plan request to the Ministry of Education in order to upgrade or replace over the next five years 30 of the 42 schools which have a high seismic risk. In addition, our five year capital plan includes requests for three new schools as well as building envelope and mechanical upgrade projects.

Food For Thought is a great example of how many of the food-related programs commonly found in Vancouver's schools- from gardening, to cooking, to healthy eating - can be combined to give students a garden-to-plate look at an essential topic.
