On Wednesday, January 16, the John Oliver Secondary Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) hosted a district forum to discuss progress on key elements of the BC Education Plan.

The Vancouver School Board has submitted an $850 million capital plan request to the Ministry of Education in order to upgrade or replace over the next five years 30 of the 42 schools which have a high seismic risk. In addition, our five year capital plan includes requests for three new schools as well as building envelope and mechanical upgrade projects.

Food For Thought is a great example of how many of the food-related programs commonly found in Vancouver's schools- from gardening, to cooking, to healthy eating - can be combined to give students a garden-to-plate look at an essential topic.

We are all saddened by the recent tragedy in Connecticut and it is understandable that there may be some anxiety about this incident. The safety and well-being of our students and staff is always a priority.

Each year, VSB staff based out of the Workshop host a fantastic fundraiser for the United Way raising thousands of dollars for the charity. This year's United Way event featured a silent auction, live auction, tasty burgers, a wonderful motivational speech and two types of the famous "Workshop Chili".

On Friday, November 23, teacher Gina Wong was recognized for her outstanding work with kindergarteners and was awarded the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence. Wong was honoured by students and staff at her old school Nightingale Elementary.

Retiring VSB staff were saluted by district management and trustees and treated to the musical stylings of the JO Jazz Band and the culinary delights of Templeton's cooks.

Today the staff and students of Kitchener Elementary officially re-opened their brand new school following an $18.7-million seismic upgrade and partial replacement of the school.

On October 19,  G.F. Strong School Program Staff (affiliated with Eric Hamber Secondary) hosted a presentation titled, “Concussion in the Classroom”.  This collaboration with G. F. Strong Rehab Centre Staff was well received by all who attended.

Adult Educators from across BC had the opportunity to work and learn together to develop writing performance standards for Foundations Language Arts Levels 5-7. BCSDCEDA (BC School District Continuing Educator's Association) contracted renowed educator and researcher Sharon Jeroski to faciliate the two days.

On Friday, October 12th, the Nightingale community came together to celebrate the school's Centennial. Different classrooms were transformed into "decade" rooms, while Nightingale staff wandered among alumni dressed in period costumes. The evening featured the music of the Tupper Jazz Band.

It’s a busy time for Vancouver school district facilities staff. As millions of British Columbians begin heading back to school, it’s their job to manage and push forward the planning, development and construction of half a dozen new cutting edge schools around the district.

The Vancouver School District will be hosting its first Annual Sustainability Conference on January 21st 2013. The conference will be held on a non-instructional day in order to facilitate district wide participation. The conference is designed to bring together the entire community to discuss, learn and take action toward achieving a comprehensive set of goals to advance and accelerate sustainability across our schools and district operations.
