This summer, while riding the ferry back to Vancouver, Grade 1 graduate Gabriel McLellan met a very special person, Judi Fox-Alder, International Director of The Terry Fox Foundation and Terry Fox's sister.

Later in the summer, Gabriel wrote a letter to Judi asking if she would be able to attend Laurier Elementary School’s annual Terry Fox Run.

For many schools in the VSB, the start of the new school year this week also meant the start of the VSB’s new waste system. The biggest change is that there are now green bins in the schools to collect organic waste, which makes up more than half of the district’s total waste. This means VSB schools have the opportunity to keep that waste away from the landfill – an estimated 3.5 million kilograms, or about 1100 full garbage trucks per year.

During the week leading up to the new school year, dozens of newcomers and immigrant parents and students from countries all over the world met at Tupper Secondary to get a better understanding of Canada’s education system, and ease their transition into Vancouver schools.

For the first time ever in BC, Grade 11 students across the district were able to complete Foodsafe, Serving it Right and WorldHost credentials in one summer school course.

The District recognizes the immense value of green spaces for our schools, as well as the benefit of these spaces to our school communities. Ensuring our students have safe learning environments, both indoors and outdoors, is our highest priority. 

Recently, school communities have asked us about our fields, and what we do to take care of them over the summer.

UPDATE: Stage 3 Permitted Uses Include:
Sports playing field (including sand-based) and school yard watering at minimum levels as required to maintain areas in useable condition is permitted;

The Sketchbook Project 2015 brought over 500 students in the district the opportunity to work with Vancouver School Board artists in residence and UBC teacher candidates.

Following a competitive application process this past winter, Point Grey Secondary student Michelle Lam was selected to participate in the 2015 CEMC Workshop in computer science at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. Due to the volume of applications, final selections are made via a random lottery from a pool of only the strongest eligible applicants, making the Grade 9 student’s selection as the only attendee all the more remarkable.

Selkirk Elementary School recently hosted students from Dickens Elementary and General Wolfe Elementary for its third annual Chess tournament. Last fall, CBC News profiled Selkirk's chess club, where Selkirk was referred to as "the school where chess is cool".

As part of a collaboration between VSB and the Vancouver Summer Mentorship Society, ten VSB students from King George, Van Tech, Templeton and Tupper were recently invited to take part in a week-long Legal Ed Bootcamp led by lawyers Alon Mizrahi (Van Tech alumni) and Isaac Filatè.

Tillicum’s Grade 3 teacher and resident bike enthusiast Jaeger Hunter is leading the way for his students to get active and have fun on their way to and from school. The “Tillicum Hummingbirds” will be biking, walking, and scootering during the week of May 25-29 as part of the regional “Bike to School Week” initiative from HUB: Your Cycling Connection.

The VSB SWIS Program Byng Project 3B will be hosting the UNICEF Newcomer Youth Ambassador Recognition & Nepal Earthquake Relief Fundraiser on May 22 (Friday) from 6:30pm to 8:30pm in the Auditorium of Lord Byng.

Students, parents, schools and communities from  across the city are invited to join the 150 volunteers to recognize the achievement of the UNICEF Newcomer Youth Ambassadors and to show support and compassion to the Nepalese community, especially the Nepalese students and families in our schools. As well the evening will include a focus on fundraising for UNICEF's Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund
