VSB Vice Principal Douglas Roch has won the most recent Canadian Association for the Study of Educational Administration (CASEA) Margret Haughey Award for his Masters of Arts thesis in educational leadership.

The VSB SWIS Program Byng Project 3B will be hosting the UNICEF Newcomer Youth Ambassador Recognition & Nepal Earthquake Relief Fundraiser on May 22 (Friday) from 6:30pm to 8:30pm in the Auditorium of Lord Byng.

Students, parents, schools and communities from  across the city are invited to join the 150 volunteers to recognize the achievement of the UNICEF Newcomer Youth Ambassadors and to show support and compassion to the Nepalese community, especially the Nepalese students and families in our schools. As well the evening will include a focus on fundraising for UNICEF's Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund

Two Windermere Grade 11 students and a Tupper Grade 11 student recently won the Create Your Canada contest. The contest, run by Vancouver/Kingsway’s MP, Don Davies, challenged students to think of a federal law that would benefit the lives of Canadians.

Over 200 people recently attended the Selkirk Elementary Annual Multicultural Potluck Dinner. The event was planned and masterfully orchestrated by Selkirk's Parent Advisory Council. Families in attendance all brought a dish to share, and ate together at banquet tables in the school gym.

Recently, the senior girls at John Oliver Secondary played host to two Canadian leaders. Wai Young, Member of Parliament - Vancouver South and Hon. Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, P.C., O.Ont., M.P., Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women came to JO to meet with the young women and discuss the importance of gender equality and hear from the students about issues that are most prevalent in their own lives.

Last month, Grade 4/5 and Grade 6/7 students from the MACC Program celebrated their heritage fair learning by showcasing their individual Canadian history projects in the gymnasium of Tecumseh.

Van Tech Secondary staff knew something had to be done when they noticed more and more students breaking down into tears in their counselors offices as they described the anxiety they felt trying to juggle their homework, extracurriculars and other life priorities.

Tecumseh Annex is all about their students being ROCK stars. The new code of conduct stands for Respect, an Open Mind, Community and Kindness and is plastered all over school walls. This semester the focus for the school is on the C (community) of ROCK star with students and staff kicking off the focus with a special celebration on April 21.

The Oppenheimer Elementary Senior Band brought home a gold rating at the recent 2015 Vancouver Kiwanis Concert Band Festival. Student music ensembles from across the province came to Richmond, BC to perform for professional adjudicators who then provided feedback in a 30-45 minute coaching session following their performances.

Van Tech’s Hairdressing student Vya Bolislis won gold and Tereeza Matti won silver at the 2015 BC Skills. They competed in three categories: Ladies Creative, Ladies Hair by Night, and Men’s Trend Cut. These categories tested their cutting, colouring, and styling techniques.

On Thursday, April 16, Jade Nawata, a Grade 11student at City School at King George Secondaryexpanded her comfort zone by rappelling nineteen floors down Vancouver's Shaw Tower. This exploit was in aid of Outward Bound Canadawho hope to raise up to $75,000 to support of their Urban Youth Programs in Vancouver.

On March 5, 58 Chinese newcomer students and parents from the SWIS Byng Project 3B celebrated a joyful Lunar New Year of the Sheep with Lord Kitchener Elementary students and teachers. The celebrations were organized by SWIS worker Janet Chung in collaboration with Catherine Feniak, principal of Lord Kitchener.

Variety - The Children’s Charity has provided the Vancouver School Board with $125,000 in funding to allow the district to purchase 50 Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) kits. The LLI kits are designed to provide additional literacy support for children in Kindergarten to grade 3. It is expected that approximately 3,500 students will benefit each year from the program.
