Laurier Annex Gymnastics Strengthens More Than Muscles

Athletics, Programs, Schools & Students

The start of the New Year is an exciting time for students at Laurier Annex, as every spring term the little gym is transformed into a gymnastics extravaganza.

“We are very lucky to have enough gymnastics equipment to fill up our whole gym…slides, ropes, balance beams, ladders, vaults you name it —we have it!” says Rosie Finch, Laurier Annex Vice Principal.

So far, the students have been busy learning many new and different gymnastics routines and building on skills from previous years.

“Our Kindergarten students began their gymnastics journey this term learning about each of the different pieces of equipment, how to safely use the equipment and ways in which they can begin to explore their own skills and strengths,” says Finch.

Over the weeks, the more experienced Grade 1-4’s review safety procedures and begin to build upon skills learned from previous years. Finch also emphasizes that the activity is also an opportunity for the older students to stretch their leadership muscles with the younger children.

“During the Friday afternoon whole-school math and gymnastics stations, our Grade 3 and 4 students have proven themselves to be fabulous buddies and mentors to our Kindergarten, Grade 1 and 2 classes, by showing them simple new gymnastic skills and techniques that the younger students can learn and successfully try."
