The Supreme Court ruling last Friday means the government will need to renegotiate with the teachers’ union about class size and composition. This will have implications for the VSB, but they won’t be fully understood for quite some time. Parents should be assured that no disruptions to their children’s education are expected.

As part of its long range facilities planning VSB has released a preliminary list of 12 schools that might be considered for closure before the start of the 2017-18 school year. As required by VSB policy and conforming to the School Act, this list is being published to give at least two months’ notice to affected schools that extensive consultation will begin if the Board decides to consider those schools for closure.

Vancouver - (June 2, 2016) –  On May 31, 2016 the Ministry of Education announced budget relief of $25-million to BC school districts. Vancouver’s share of the additional funding is approximately $2.25-million, reducing the VSB 2016-17 budget shortfall from $24.2-million to $21.8-million.

The Vancouver Board of Education voted unanimously to retain the General Gordon Elementary Outbuilding, better known as “the little yellow schoolhouse” on the condition that it does not delay occupancy of the new school for September 2016 and that an interested party comes forward with a proposal to fund the restoration and future use of the building.

Vancouver – (June 15, 2015) – At the start of tonight’s public Board meeting, Christopher Richardson announced his resignation as chairperson of the Vancouver Board of Education. The Board accepted his resignation and Vice Chairperson Janet Fraser assumed the role of interim chairperson to preside over the meeting.

Board Chairperson Christopher Richardson says he was surprised by the Minister of Education’s decision to appoint an independent special advisor since last week the Board had already signed a contract with the professional accounting firm Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) to do essentially what the provincially appointed advisor will be asked to do.

The Vancouver School Board remains committed to pushing forward on current timelines aimed at upgrading schools requiring seismic mitigation as soon as possible despite media reports that indicate the Ministry of Education expects that it may take longer than the original targeted date of 2020 to complete all seismic projects.
