Earlier this week the Vancouver School Board passed a motion calling on the BC Government to immediately reverse the announced cuts to BC school districts for graduated adults who plan to upgrade their courses.

The Vancouver School Board is calling on the public this holiday season to support its Student Emergency Fund, a special account used to support school principals so they can directly aid vulnerable students coping with a wide-range of emergency needs.

The Vancouver School Board is pleased to announce it has signed an agreement with the provincial government to establish a Vancouver Seismic Mitigation Project Office to expedite the completion of all remaining upgrades to seismically high-risk Vancouver public schools.

Earlier this week, Dr. Steve Cardwell advised the Vancouver Board of Education that, after completing five years as Superintendent and CEO of the Vancouver School District, he would be leaving the district at the end of December. Cardwell will be moving on to a newly established position as Professor of Teaching and Director of Executive Educational Leadership at the University of British Columbia starting in January 2015.

The Vancouver School Board and Langara College are exploring a partnership with respect to the operation of the VSB’s Continuing Education program. The goal of the partnership is to ensure that the community continues to benefit from diverse and affordable programming in a wide range of interest areas.

Today 92 public elementary schools and annexes across Vancouver are opening their doors to new kindergarten registrations. The initial kindergarten registration period will last between November 1, 2013 and January 31, 2014 and will include a new online choice program application process, which will begin in early January and go until the end of the month.

Today the Vancouver School Board announced the awarding of a fixed-price contract to Bouygues Building Canada to design and build the Kitsilano Secondary School Renewal (KSSR) project. The estimated project cost is $62.2 million, which includes the requirement to incorporate the latest in seismic construction standards. The project is funded through the Ministry of Education’s seismic mitigation program.

On Monday evening, the Vancouver Board of Education Management and Coordinating Committee will discuss a recommendation from the Committee Chairperson and School Trustee, Mike Lombardi to initiate a Student Trustee Pilot Project for the next school year. Trustee Lombardi consulted with senior staff, legal counsel, and the Vancouver District Student Council Representatives to develop a draft policy and regulations

The Vancouver School Board is teaming up with BCIT and the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at enhancing career and training opportunities for young skilled workers interested in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

The new StrongStart program offers a high-quality early learning program that has proved to be successful amongst families and caregivers. The program operates at no cost to families.

Last night the Vancouver School Board passed a motion calling on both regional and national media to follow best practices outlined by the Canadian Psychiatric Association when reporting on the sensitive issue of teen suicide within British Columbia.

Vancouver’s newest school will soon be given a permanent name. The Vancouver School Board is reaching out to the community to help find a name for the West Side school currently known as ‘Acadia Road’. Located near UBC, the new school is currently undergoing construction and is expected to open its doors to students in the fall of 2014.
