The Vancouver School Board is committed to ensuring that costs are kept to a minimum following the Ministry of Education’s direction to all school districts earlier this month requiring them to generate and distribute report cards even though they will be without marks during the current teachers’ job action.

Last night the Planning and Facilities Committee of the Vancouver Board of Education received a preliminary draft report from Coriolos Consulting outlining the current seismic risks facing many of the district’s oldest schools. The assessment detailed three options for each school and provided preliminary estimated costs required to seismically upgrade, renovate and/or replace 48 aging schools.

Vancouver School Board Chair Patti Bacchus is pleased to hear the province will fund the teachers’ provincially negotiated salary increase and reinstate at least for 2010-2011 the Annual Facilities Grant that was canceled last August, but warns the district still faces $17.6 million in unfunded costs.

In support of its position that the education of our children and youth is the best investment of public funds, the Vancouver Board of Education passed a series of resolutions Wednesday night calling on the provincial government to: fully fund increased costs to school districts; restore grants that have been cancelled or reduced; fund the costs of H1N1 prevention; fund increased employee MSP premium increases; grant 75 percent Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) rebates to school districts; alter legislation to allow boards to carry deficits; and fully fund all-day Kindergarten implementation.
