The Supreme Court ruling last Thursday means the government will need to renegotiate with the teachers’ union about class size and composition. This will have implications for the VSB, but they won’t be fully understood for quite some time. Parents should be assured that no disruptions to their children’s education are expected.

After reviewing staff reports with information about schools on the preliminary list to be considered for closure, members of VSB’s Joint Committee of Planning and Education (Committee II/III) have recommended the Board move forward with 11 out of 12 schools for consideration of closure.

The Vancouver Board of Education has rejected a Ministry of Education proposal to partially address a $21.8 million shortfall in the district’s 2016-17 operating budget.

As part of its long range facilities planning VSB has released a preliminary list of 12 schools that might be considered for closure before the start of the 2017-18 school year. As required by VSB policy and conforming to the School Act, this list is being published to give at least two months’ notice to affected schools that extensive consultation will begin if the Board decides to consider those schools for closure.

Vancouver - (June 2, 2016) –  On May 31, 2016 the Ministry of Education announced budget relief of $25-million to BC school districts. Vancouver’s share of the additional funding is approximately $2.25-million, reducing the VSB 2016-17 budget shortfall from $24.2-million to $21.8-million.
