Henderson Annex recently had some very talented carpenters help with the construction of some new garden boxes. Tupper Tech Grade 12 trades students came out to mentor and teach Henderson Grade 4/5s about woodworking and teamwork. The end result was four beautiful garden boxes and a many happy faces.

Over the last few weeks John Oliver student leaders, guided by teachers, staff and administrators, have dispersed out into the school and worked with their peers to design a school digital on-line code of conduct that is clear and realistic.

Every fall the Canadian Mathematical Society hosts a nationwide competition for students across the country. The Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) is Canada's premier national mathematics competition, open to any student with an interest in mathematics.

From the hundreds of entrants across the country, VSB students took 14 out 60 top prizes — more than any other district.

While many were wondering who would take gold in Sochi, another equally nail-biting competition was underway in East Vancouver at Britannia Elementary. 

For over a week Justin Borsato’s Grade 7 class sweated, planned, painted, stapled, and glitter glued in the creation of their team go-carts. Restricted to found items in the school, balloons, and a rattrap, each team had to create a cart that would: Go far, go fast, and look good.

Last week, individuals and departments on the 3rd floor of the VSB Ed Centre celebrated National Flag of Canada Day in a big way.

Staff from the Planning, Facilities, Career Programs and IT departments, and the BCeSIS team came together on Thursday morning for coffee, maple leaf cookies (baked by ACE IT student chefs at David Thompson Secondary), Canadian trivia and a rousing rendition of ‘O Canada’.

Byng was busy in the New Year. Roughly 364 elementary students were visiting the school to audition for 90 spots in the Byng Arts program, a popular mini-school that supports students who wish to focus their energy and passion on performing arts, fine arts and music.

On January 16, Selkirk Elementary intermediate students were wildly excited about a visit from BC Lions football stars. The Lions visited Selkirk to teach the students about energy conservation.

Osler Elementary Grade 7 student Helena Kantowicz was recently honoured for a polished and in-depth film she createdabout residential schools in Canada. Kantowicz was among the four winners of the national Young Citizens Award (another winner was Nicolas Cain from Captain James Cook Elementary).
