Seven high schools show their musical talent at District Jazz Festival

Schools & Students

The auditorium was hopping, the band room was jumping, and even the cafeteria at Point Grey Secondary was buzzing with the sounds of jazz when the school hosted the Vancouver District Jazz Festival on November 16. Seven VSB high schools were represented by 13 different jazz bands at this annual event.

Junior and senior students from Sir Winston Churchill, Templeton, Point Grey, Magee, David Thompson, Eric Hamber and Vancouver Technical Secondary Schools were represented at the festival.

Each band performed two or three songs in the auditorium to an appreciative audience of parents and students. One of three uber-talented adjudicators then met them in a workshop to provide additional coaching and instruction to improve their musical stylings.

Adjudicators were the Juno-nominated bassist, bandleader and educator Jodi Proznick, trombonist and music educator Dennis Esson and well-known trumpeter and educator Tom Shorthouse.
