VSB Statement on cancellation of BC Hydro SEED proposal

Media Release

The Vancouver School Board learned yesterday that BC Hydro has cancelled its SEED project that proposed putting a substation underneath school board land in the West End.

While we hadn’t yet made any decisions whether or not to move forward with the proposal, we had been intrigued by the possibilities and the potential of receiving funding to build new schools quickly in downtown Vancouver. We heard from staff, parents and our stakeholder groups about their views on the proposal, and they clearly were interested in getting more space for students in Vancouver’s downtown.

We know there is a need for new schools to relieve capacity pressures in the West End and throughout downtown, so I will continue to advocate to the provincial government for funding to build the new schools Vancouver needs in these areas.

I’d like to thank the parents, staff and stakeholders for their participation in the consultation process on this proposal. I’d also like to thank our staff for assisting in the process, and for all their work to prepare this complicated proposal to come to the Board for a decision.
