Windermere Aims to Get Half their Students Running the Sun Run

Windermere Secondary is gunning to get over half their students jogging and walking in this year’s Vancouver Sun Run.

According to PE department head Brad White, based on current registration numbers the school is well on its way to that goal. If the numbers hold out, White hopes to surpass Churchill Secondary, who last year held the title of the largest school running group.

White says currently the school has well over 600 kids, out of a school population of 1150, signed up. In previous years the school’s Sun Run ranks have swollen to 750 runners.

“Amazingly it isn’t too hard to get the kids interested,” says White. “The Grade 8s like the whole school spirit aspect of it. We want to get them interested to see what 50,000 Vancouverites do for fitness and fun.”

White says the running also has the additional benefits of getting kids active and countering the ever-present concern of student obesity. He says the school is also starting to do some outreach to get their elementary family of schools involved.
