JHF: Student Safety

J: Students

The Board of School Trustees (the “Board”) has the duty to create and maintain a safe environment for the students and staff in its schools and, to that end, enlists the help of professional and support staff and the students themselves to be alert to safety hazards and safety concerns in the schools.

Instruction in courses in industrial arts, science, home economics, art, physical education, and health will include and emphasize safety measures and accident prevention. Before students are allowed to use equipment or perform tasks that may carry safety hazards, they will be instructed in all applicable safety rules, and instructors will enforce all safety rules set up for particular classes. These will include the wearing of protective eye devices in appropriate activities.

The Board also wishes to protect students from danger and harassment while they are in school, on school grounds, and on their way to and from school. For that reason, the Board co-operates with the Vancouver Police Department in warning students of the danger from molesters and persons loitering in and around schools. Teachers are requested to communicate to their students basic safety rules suggested by police and to notify the police immediately if strangers are spotted in or near schools.

Further, the Board has set precautions for cases of early dismissal of students and for the protection of their personal privacy and records from unauthorized inquiries. These policies and procedures are filed under codes JEDB, Student Dismissal Precautions and JO, Student Records.

The Board wishes to emphasize that no school safety program can be effective unless everyone in the school community co-operates in the effort. All safety measures, whether they be fire drills, periodic clean-ups of classrooms and schools and grounds, safety instruction, or the wearing of protective clothing and eye devices in certain classes, will require the full and serious co-operation of everyone, regardless of assigned duties.
