​ Highlights: Inaugural meeting of 2022-2026 Board – November 7, 2022

The 2022-2026 Vancouver School Board held its augural meeting of its four-year term Monday, November 7, 2022. Trustees, elected in October’s municipal election, were sworn in as members of the Board. The agenda also included the election of chair and vice chair who serve a one-year term.

Meeting highlights 

Prior to the swearing into office ceremony, family, friends, community members and staff were welcomed to the unceded and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations, by Alec Dan, member of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm community. Following, he shared a welcome song. 

Superintendent Helen McGregor also shared opening remarks, welcoming the new Board to District community. She acknowledged the exciting opportunities ahead of the Board in fulfilling the Education Plan and collective call-to-action for the Board and staff in support of students.  

The meeting’s agenda included the election of a chair and vice chair who each serve a one-year term. Both positions were filled by acclamation with Victoria Jung elected as chair and Preeti Faridkot as vice chair.  

New Business 

As a matter of new business, trustee Faridkot issued a notice of motion about reinstating the School Liaison Officer Program (SLO) which will be presented at the Board’s first regular meeting scheduled for November 28, 2022.
