The government recently passed legislation to mark September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Colonialism, genocide, and the effects of residential schools continue to impact Indigenous peoples, communities, and Nations. Our efforts towards Truth and Reconciliation must go beyond this one day, as we continue to hear the truth, listen to Indigenous people, learn the true collective history, and take real actions every day to show our commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action.
The Vancouver School District continues to stand with all First Nations communities and Indigenous peoples. Schools will be closed on this day to provide time for quiet reflection or participation in events that may take place in the community.
The District also acknowledges Indigenous families within the VSB and would like to offer our support to them on this day and throughout the year.
The District remains committed to continued Reconciliation work necessary for the truth to be known and shared through education.
Details about how the District and schools will acknowledge the day will be shared in the coming weeks.
