Today on National Indigenous Veterans Day, a group of students at Southlands Elementary read a poem called ‘The Heart of Bravery’ to honour Indigenous Veterans for their past and current service. The poem is written by Brittany Amell, an Indigenous student from Carleton University, who talks about finding the courage to be brave through big or small actions.
Grade 6/7 students Katherine Bethell, Miles Lewinson and Taye Campbell each took turns to read parts of the poem to the entire school to listen to during the morning announcements. The students also shared a brief history on Indigenous veterans and their bravery during the First and Second World Wars.
Today, we remember and honour Indigenous Veterans for their service and sacrifices from coast to coast. #LestWeForget
