Today the Vancouver School District celebrated Support Staff Recognition Day with an appreciation breakfast at the Education Centre. Members from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) were in attendance.

From building staff, office support, student and school support assistants, supervision aides and cafeteria workers to staff in grounds, material services, operations, and many trades groups, support staff throughout the District contribute their skills and expertise with dedication so that students can thrive.

“Since starting in a office support role at the District in 2019, my experience working with schools has been great,” says Tara Shea, an office support worker in employee services. “My favorite thing about my job is that I am continuously learning about how all the different support staff in the District all work together,” she adds.

In appreciation of all support staff do, the District provides two $2,500 scholarships, that will be awarded to graduating students at the end of each school year.

The recipients of last year’s award in honour of support staff were David Thompson Secondary student, Emily Lee, and Churchill Secondary student, Andara Ahmad. In their scholarship submissions, each shared how support staff impacted their educational experience.
