As the calendar year draws to a close, the District kicks off the last school day of 2020 with a very special story. On November 19, the District held its very first virtual music festival event.

Held live on location at each participating school, teachers, students and families joined the event together virtually through the Microsoft TEAMS online platform. The festival brought school communities together to stay connected and in a safe and creative space, so students could share music amongst their peers and families.

The festival featured a mixture of musical disciplines, including a live performance from Magee Secondary’s chamber choir. The group performed three songs in their school gym – masked and physically distant. The biggest hit from the event’s virtual audience was the song ‘Shallow’ from the film ‘A Star is Born’ starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

“When I checked the meeting event during Magee’s performance, we hit a total of 131 attendees,” says Celia Jong, the District’s arts coordinator and event organizer. Jong laughs that this number is not bad for the District’s first virtual music festival event and says there was room to host 200 more attendees virtually, which speaks volumes for the possibility of future virtual events in the District.

The night also included performances from Vancouver Technical Secondary’s intermediate band, Lord Byng Secondary’s intermediate strings, Vancouver Technical Secondary's intermediate strings, Killarney Secondary’s senior strings and Vancouver Technical Secondary’s senior Jazz band.

Jong also notes that the attendance did not include families at home. “After the event, I heard that most students logged in with their parents and families,” Jong explains. “That is two or more logins from homes, and we can’t forget all of the teachers logged in at schools too,” she adds.

Jong also shares her excitement for the possibilities for more virtual events in the new year.
