Graduation Awards

At the Point Grey Graduation Ceremonies in June, a variety of awards are presented to Grade 12 students in recognition of outstanding achievement in all areas of school life: athletics, citizenship, fine arts, leadership, scholarship, service, and exceptional performance. A number of these awards are donated and presented by community groups and businesses. Most of these awards are based on students' performance in the last two years of school.

POINT GREY AWARDS COMMITTEE

The Point Grey Awards Committee assists the administration in the selection of candidates of all Graduation Awards. The committee seeks to carefully and impartially select candidates who best suit the criteria of each award. In general, all students receiving awards must have demonstrated exceptional citizenship in the school. More information about awards can be obtained from Awards Committee members.

GRADUATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Most Point Grey Graduation Scholarships are based on students' performance in the last two years of school. The following is a summary of the major awards and scholarships that are offered.  A more detailed description of these awards may be obtained from the Point Grey Awards Committee.

ART NORDMAN ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP, ACADEMIC MEDAL, AND PLAQUE

is presented to the second highest ranking academic student. The recipient is selected based on both his/her grades 11 and 12 marks and honour roll status. Eligible candidates must be registered (or have taken) any of the senior English 12 courses offered at Point Grey.

ARTONA ART BURSARY

is presented to the top visual arts student who has studied art in his/her senior years at Point Grey and who intends to attend a post secondary institution to study art. Nominations for this award are made by the Point Grey Art Department.

BRENNA INNES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

is presented to a student with strong athletic ability, along with an excellent academic record and work ethic. Nominations for this award are made by Point Grey Athletic Board.

DANIELLE HORWITZ SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARD 

is presented to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to social issues.  Nominations for the award are made by Point Grey Staff and the Counselling Department.

DARREN PAUL JACOBSON MEMORIAL PLAQUE AND BURSARY

is presented to an outstanding student in the school's music program who intends to continue music studies. Nominations for this award come from the Point Grey Music Department.

DISTRICT SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

are offered by the provincial government to Vancouver students. These scholarships are awarded to students who have excelled in non-academic areas. Although the school nominees are selected in May/June, the school cannot present these awards at Graduation as the school district does not confirm the final list of recipients until the following September.

EMILY CARR INSTITUTE VISUAL ARTS SCHOLARSHIP

is provided by the Emily Carr Institute to recognize an outstanding visual arts student. Nominations for this award are made by the Point Grey Art Department.

GOVERNOR GENERAL'S ACADEMIC MEDAL AND CERTIFICATE

are presented to the top ranking academic student. The recipient is selected based on both his/her grades 11 and 12 marks in all subjects.

GREYHOUND ATHLETIC AWARD AND PLAQUE

is an inspiration award given to the student in the graduating class who best demonstrates athletic excellence, leadership and citizenship. Nominations are made by the Point Grey Athletic Board.

HOUNDS STRENGTH OF CHARACTER AWARD

is presented each year to the graduating student who best exemplifies the strength of character found in the HOUNDS Code of Conduct (Honour, Ownership, Unity, Niceness, Determination, and Safety).  Students interested in this award may obtain an application form through TEAMS or the Grade 12 counselor in late March/ early April.

JAMES KARLINER DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES ASSOCIATION AWARD

is presented to a student in the special education program who has demonstrated courage to overcome obstacles and has shown strength of character through his/her high school years. Nominations for this award are made by both the Counselling and the Life Skills Departments.

JOHN PLOMMER MINI SCHOOL BURSARY AND PLAQUE

is presented to a Mini School student who has made significant contributions to the life of the Mini School and has been a good scholar. Nominations for this award are made by the Point Grey Mini School Staff.

JOHN PROCYK SCHOLARSHIP AND PLAQUE

is presented to a Mini School student who has contributed significantly to life in the Mini School and who is an exceptional senior science student. Nominations for this award are made by the Point Grey Mini School Staff.

JOSH PLATZER MEMORIAL AWARD (1)

is presented to a student who has demonstrated personal courage in the face of adversity and life challenges. Nominations for this award are made by the Counselling Department and the Point Grey Awards Committee.

JOSH PLATZER MEMORIAL AWARD (2)

is presented to a student who has been noted for gentleness of spirit and caring and compassion for others in the school community. Nominations for this award are made by the Counselling Department and the Point Grey Awards Committee.

KERRISDALE LUMBER AWARD

is presented to a student who has taken technical studies courses at Point Grey in his/her senior years and who will be a attending a post secondary institution. Nominations for this award are made by the Point Grey Technical Studies Department.

MINI SCHOOL INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

is presented to a student in the Mini School who has shown evidence of a very high individual achievement in a non-academic area and has achieved honour roll standing. Nominations for this award are made by the Point Grey Mini School Staff.

OLIVER MATTHEW MEMORIAL AWARD

is presented to an outstanding citizen of Point Grey who is known by his/her teachers, coaches, and peers as a positive, caring, and contributing citizen of the school. The recipient will have displayed excellence in the school's athletic program and in academics. Nominations for this award may be made by fellow students and/or Point Grey staff.  Nomination forms are available (late March/early April) through TEAMS  or the Grade 12 Counselor.

PAC SERVICE TROPHY AND SCHOLARSHIP

is presented to the student who has made outstanding service contributions to the school. The recipient is nominated by the Point Grey Awards Committee on the basis of service points and variety of service in the school in both grades 11 and 12.

PETER ST. LOUIS ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP, STAFF TROPHY AND ACADEMIC MEDAL

are presented to the top academic student. The recipient is selected based on both his/her grades 11 and 12 marks and honour roll status. Eligible candidates must be registered (or have taken) any of the senior English 12 courses offered at Point Grey.

POINT GREY ACADEMIC MEDALS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

are presented to outstanding academic scholars. Academic scholarships are awarded to students based on both their grades 11 and 12 marks and honour roll status. Eligible candidates must be registered (or have taken) any of the senior English 12 courses offered at Point Grey.

POINT GREY ATHLETIC TROPHY AND SCHOLARSHIP

are presented to the athlete who best combines excellence and leadership in athletics with the spirit of sportsmanship. Nominations are made by the Point Grey Athletic Board.

POINT GREY CITIZENSHIP AWARD

is presented to a student who has been recognized by staff for the excellent example of citizenship and leadership he/she has demonstrated in his/her senior years. This award is funded by the alumni of the Point Grey Class of 1975.  Nominations are made by the Staff and the Point Grey Awards Committee.

POINT GREY COMMITMENT TO LEARNING AWARD

is funded by the Brenna Innes Memorial Scholarship fund. It is presented to a deserving student who has demonstrated good citizenship and a commitment to lifelong learning. Nominations for this award are made by the Counselling Department and the Point Grey Awards Committee.

POINT GREY FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS TROPHY AND SCHOLARSHIP

are presented to a student who has exhibited outstanding achievement in any of the fine and performing arts at Point Grey. Nominations for this award come from the Art, Music, and Drama departments.

POINT GREY HOME ECONOMICS AWARD AND PLAQUE

are presented to a student who has taken a number of Home Economics classes during his/her years at Point Grey. The student will have demonstrated an outstanding level of achievement and service. Nominations are made by the Home Economics Department.

POINT GREY HUMANITIES ACADEMIC AWARD

is awarded to a student who has excelled in the academic humanities: Social Studies, English, and Modern Languages. The recipient has further demonstrated interest in this field of studies by taking more than the required number of courses in one or both areas. Candidates for this award are nominated by members of the English, Social Studies, and Modern Languages departments.

POINT GREY MERIT GOLD PINS

are presented to students who are nominees for the Point Grey Merit Trophy and Scholarship. Students receiving gold pins will have demonstrated excellence in at least three of four areas: athletics, fine arts, scholarship, and service.

POINT GREY MERIT TROPHY AND SCHOLARSHIP

are presented to the student who displays outstanding achievement in the combined fields of athletics, fine arts, service and scholarship. The recipient must have accumulated points in at least three of these four areas. Nominations for this award are made by the Point Grey Awards Committee.

POINT GREY MODERN LANGUAGES AWARD

is presented to a student who has demonstrated an exceptional interest in studying a foreign language course taught at Point Grey. Nominations for this award are made by the Modern Languages Department.

POINT GREY MULTICULTURAL AND HUMANITARIAN AWARD

is presented to a student who has provided service and leadership in multicultural and/or humanitarian issues. Preference is given to a student who has participated and/or led school curricular or extra curricular activities which have promoted cross-cultural relations, understanding, and/or global awareness. Nominations for this award are made by Point Grey Staff.

POINT GREY MUSIC SUPPORTERS SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP

is awarded to a student in the music program who has shown exceptional talent and has contributed outstanding service to the music program. Nominations for this award are made by the Point Grey Music Department.

POINT GREY THEATRE COMPANY AWARD AND PLAQUE

are presented to a student who has shown evidence of outstanding achievement in the area of Drama, Acting, Musical Theatre, and/or Directing. Preference is given to a student who plans to pursue post-secondary education in the areas of theatre and/or film studies. Nominations for this award are made by the Drama Department.

POINT GREY SILVER SERVICE PINS

are presented to students who are nominees for the PAC Service Trophy and Scholarship. Students receiving service pins have given significant and varied service to the school community.

POINT GREY YEARBOOK AWARD

is presented to a student in recognition of outstanding service and contribution to the Point Grey Annual.

PRINCIPAL'S AWARD

is a prize that has been designed to recognize those students who, through their individual efforts, have made Point Grey a better place for staff and students. Although these students may not excel in any one particular area, their overall effort is exemplary and they have contributed to making Point Grey a better place for all to be. Nominations for this award are made by staff and presented to the principal and to the awards committee for consideration.

PRINCIPAL'S AWARD FOR SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP

is selected by the awards committee in conjunction with the principal to recognize a student who, through his/her individual efforts, has made Point Grey a better place for staff and students. The recipient of this award has not only displayed impressive leadership and service in the school community but has also made a lasting impression through positive attitude, enthusiasm, and helpful nature.

ROSEMARY MCTAVISH MEMORIAL FIELDHOCKEY BURSARY

is presented to a student for the skills she has developed, the contribution she has made to field hockey at Point Grey, and the sportsmanship she has shown on the field. Nominations are made by the Point Grey Athletic Board.

SCOTT PORTER MEMORIAL PLAQUE AND BURSARY

is presented to a student who has shown great determination in meeting a challenge and maximizing his or her strengths.  The student may also have markedly improved his/her achievements in scholarship, physical education, vocational studies or school service. Nominations are made by Point Grey Staff.

stəywəte:ń INDIGENOUS AWARD AND PLAQUE

recognizes the contribution of a Point Grey student to the strengthening and advancement of Indigenous culture and learning. Nominations for this award are made by the Indigenous Program Teacher.

VANCOUVER ASSOCIATION OF SECONDARY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS (VASSA) SCHOLARSHIP

is presented to a student who demonstrates academic excellence, as well as leadership, citizenship and service. Nominations for this award are made by the Point Grey Administration in conjunction with the Point Grey Awards Committee.

VANCOUVER SECONDARY TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION BURSARY

is presented to a student who has expressed an interest in entering the teaching profession and has exhibited satisfactory scholarship and service to the school community. Students interested in this award may obtain an application form through TEAMS or the Grade 12 counselor in March/April.

VERMA FAMILY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP

is presented to a student in the Mini School who demonstrates strong academic achievement and service to the school and community.  This scholarship honours resiliency, perseverance and a willingness to help others.  Nominations for this award are made by Point Grey Mini School Staff.
