David Oppenheimer Elementary School is located in a culturally diverse community and is characterized by a history of excellent teaching, successful traditions and strong parent support. Oppenheimer teachers and support staff bring a vast array of gifts and specializations to the learning community. The staff is committed to innovative teaching. Oppenheimer is known for a first-rate science program, high quality art instruction, great athletic performance and exceptional band and music programs, at both intermediate and primary levels.
Through the generosity of the Parent Advisory Council and creative fundraising, Oppenheimer School is able to continue to offer exciting initiatives, which includes our Grade 7 camp on Vancouver Island, a winter skating program, school wide gymnastics and dance programs, increased investments in computer and technology resources as well as a wide variety of stimulating field studies and in-class enrichment programs for all ages throughout the year. These extra-curricular initiatives help support our goals of building respectful relationships and developing local and global environmental sustainability.
Our student body consists of approximately 335 students from kindergarten through to Grade 7. The community incorporates a broad mix of multicultural and multilingual families. 58% of our families speak another language as well as English. In total, there are over 26 languages spoken in the homes of our school community. About a third of our families speak Mandarin or Cantonese while other ethnic roots range from all parts of the globe. About a third of our students speak English as a second language. This cultural mix helps to keep the energy in our school vibrant and complex.
