David Thompson Grade 10s Fulfill Wish Lists
Since 1897, the YWCA Metro Vancouver has been working to achieve its vision of women’s equality by implementing programs and initiatives that support low-income single mothers and their children. Today, they are one of Metro Vancouver’s largest and most diversified non-profit organizations that continues to pursue their mission of touching lives and building better futures for women and their families.
New Faces Leaders (NFL) at David Thompson is a leadership program run by Mrs. Monk involving students from Grades 10 to 12. Supervised by Mrs. Monk, the grade 10 leaders decided to partner up with the Vancouver YWCA to take initiative in supporting the greater Vancouver community during these unprecedented times.
The fundraiser ran through January and aimed to collect items mentioned on the YWCA’s four wish lists: the Single Mothers’ wish list, the Crabtree Corner Kitchen Grocery wish list, the Early Learning and Child Care wish list, and the Single Mothers’ House-warming Basket wish list.
Items collected covered a diverse range of needs from essential household items such as coathangers and toiletries to hygiene and beauty care items including toothpaste, combs, and lotions. Additionally, kitchen essentials gathered included a broad selection ranging from food wrap to cooking ingredients and nonperishable goods.
Throughout the process of organizing and carrying out this fundraiser, the grade 10’s have gained valuable skills and learned important lessons. Connecting to their greater community through the act of donating increased their awareness of the struggles that many people in our society face. For many students, the fundraiser helped reflect on everyday items often taken for granted. In doing this fundraiser, the NFL hopes to inspire future leaders who can serve their community as well.
This fundraiser was not only an opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills but also a reminder to think outside of ourselves in recognizing the hardships inflicted upon many others and the potential of our impacts on the community we live in.
