David Thompson Students Organize Sock Drive
The New Faces Leaders (NFL) at David Thompson is a Leadership program involving students from Grade 10 to 12 who are dedicated to providing a smooth transition for Grade 8 students entering the uncharted territories of high school. In the past, the NFL have hosted events such as pumpkin carving, Grade 8 breakfast, and a carnival for the new students. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, large gatherings have been put on hold, so the NFL is trying to find new ways to connect with their community.
As winter creeps around the corner, bringing cold and rainy weather, socks become essential to keeping warm. So, this year, the New Faces Leaders promoted and ran a “Cozy Toes Sock Drive'' in collaboration with the Grade 8 students who helped collect socks and cash donations. The David Thompson students reached out to family, friends, and members of the community to see if they had any new socks they were willing to donate.
By the end of the two-week donation period, students managed to gather over 300 pairs of new socks. Additionally, they collected over $150.00 worth of cash donations, which will be used to purchase more socks to include in the contribution that will be given to the Vancouver YWCA.
The YWCA is a non-profit organization that has dedicated themselves to impacting the lives of women and their families by offering a better future that promotes economic independence, well-being, and equal opportunities. The YWCA takes donations of clothing throughout the year, but these donations are especially appreciated in the winter months. The David Thompson NFL team has gladly offered to aid in that mission by providing socks, one of the top items on the YWCA’s “urgently needed” list.
Embarking on this fundraiser has given the Grade 8 students the opportunity to express leadership within their school community, and beyond, by showing compassion and kindness to those who are less fortunate.
The David Thompson NFL program is excited to partner-up with the YWCA and send their donations to members of the community who need it most.
