Hastings Winter Warm-Up Tuesday, December 10

Hastings Winter Concert

Thanks in advance to our new part-time teacher-librarian and prep teacher, Ms Katelyn, who has taken on organizing a winter concert. Families are invited to attend the concert Thursday, December 19 from 11 to 11:45am. A dress rehearsal for students will be held the day before the concert. A list of performing divisions will be shared with families soon.

Communicating Student Learning (CSL)

For the 2019-20 school year, VSB teachers are continuing to work to better align their reporting practices with the redesigned curriculum. The goal is to create a reporting process that is more timely and responsive with increased student ownership and parent involvement. Teachers have the opportunity to report to parents in more flexible ways while providing clear and understandable information about their child.

Teachers are required to engage in a minimum of 5 communications of student learning with families over the school year. A communication of student learning must help a student answer the questions: Where am I now? Where am I going? What do I need to get there? Two of the communications must be written: a mid year written report that will be sent home at the end of January, and a year end written report that will be sent home at the end of June. Other communications can include: 3 way conferences, electronic portfolio reviews, parent-teacher conferences, reflections on student work, Fresh Grade or other online platforms, telephone conversations, Individual Education Plan meetings, celebrations of learning, etc.

Please contact your child's teacher for more information regarding CSL in their class.

Bell Schedule Reminder

Students and families are reminded our welcome bell rings at 8:55am, and our first period begins at 9:00am each morning. Students and families are asked to wait outside before school in the mornings until after our welcome bell rings. There is no need for students to enter the school before the welcome bell to drop off their backpacks or other belongings. Families are reminded to ensure their children are dressed appropriately for the weather. School staff are on supervision duty outside the school from 8:40 to 9:00am and from 3:00 to 3:20pm to ensure the safety of students. Before school, staff are busy preparing for the day, please help to ensure they have a quiet, distraction-free workspace.

Our bell schedule is available on the Contact Information page of our school website.

Visitors to the School Please Check In at the Office

All visitors to the school are reminded they must first check in at the office before continuing with their business in the school. Depending on the expected duration of their visit, visitors to the school may be asked to sign in and sign out, and/or wear an identification badge. Family members or caregivers picking up students at lunchtime or after school are encouraged to wait outside for their children until after the respective bells ring. Thank you for helping us to be aware of who is in our building, and for helping to keep our school safe.

Rainy Day Gear

As we move into the fall and winter, please remember all students are expected to go outside for some much needed physical activity and fresh air, even if it's raining. Students are encouraged to come to school dressed appropriately for whatever the weather conditions may be. During Vancouver's wetter seasons, this means students should have a waterproof jacket, and waterproof shoes or boots. An umbrella is also suggested. Please remember Vancouver weather can be unpredictable during the fall, winter and spring, and that even a day that starts out dry, could become rainy. Please contact the office if you need help acquiring rain gear for your child.
