We are beginning May with a better grasp of how to function in these trying times but with many challenges still ahead. Hopefully, your child has been getting into the swing of things with their online learning. I would encourage you to speak with your children and see if they need help with anything, if they think the work is too much or not enough. We encourage you to be in contact with the teachers if you need clarification on items or need to inform them of a challenging home situation that is preventing your child from completing the assignments. Communication right now is the key to having the best learning opportunities for each individual household.
A couple of days ago, you should have also received a document from the Vancouver School District about Assessment guidelines for the remainder of the school year. This would have stated that the minimum mark at student will receive in any course will be the cumulative mark that the student was receiving on March 13, 2020. This mark can increase through the rest of the year but won't decrease. This does not mean that students should stop working as teachers are trying to give enough work so that the students will be successful should they take the next level of work in that course. We are encouraging all students to continue with their studies.
Also occurring this week has been an opening of the school at select times for students to come in an pick up all the items in their lockers. At writing of this memo, we have had around 300 students come in to pick things up and we are loving seeing them happy, safe and in many cases with longer hair! Locker collection continues until Tuesday next week. If you have missed this window, please email an administrator and we will figure out a time that your child can come in to collect their items.
Moving forward to Summer school. We have been informed that Summer School will be occurring in the Summer for a limited number of Grade 10, 11, and 12 courses that involved with Graduation requirements. The course will be self paced but occur over 6 weeks in the summer. No Remedial or Preview courses will be occurring. More information should be able to be found on the VSB website as registration begins on May 11th, 2020.
As we move into the end of the school year, we are needing to look at what end of year routines we can continue with and which we can not. We are looking at all items through a lens of Safety, Fairness, and Equity. Keep an eye on this update as well as emails home that specify if there are items that are relevant to you. And if you have any questions don't hesitate to send us an email or call us.
