This week, students have participated in a school-wide lesson on Indigenous relationships. The goal of the lesson is to build student awareness and understanding of the significance of Indigenous representation and to explore how changing our sports logo and team name, the Blue Demons, could be an act of Reconciliation.
The lesson was designed by a team of staff members to develop Reconciliation initiatives at Kitsilano. These efforts are recognized by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), supported by multiple levels of Government, and embedded in both the VSB Strategic Plan and our own Kitsilano School Plan. A follow-up lesson is planned for June.
Next week, students will have an opportunity to share their ideas, questions and opinions with their student representatives and sign-up to participate in an online forum to discuss this initiative and future plan on Reconciliation.
