Dear Kitsilano Grads and Families,
The purpose of this message is to provide clarification to inquiries received from our communication sent on June 11, 2020 regarding Graduate Recognition and Celebration procedures.
As per Provincial Health Office and VSB School District Guidelines, Schools are to develop procedures which maximize physical spacing and minimize physical time/contact.
Therefore, specific to the Graduation Recognition and Celebration activities:
- Only school staff and students are permitted in building.
- Parents/Guardians and family cannot enter the building for any reason.
- Graduates are highly encouraged to pick up their grad gown attire on Friday, June 12, 2020. HOWEVER, if unable to do so, grad attire packages will be distributed at the graduates’ scheduled time on Monday, June 15, 2020.
- Opportunity to retrieve locker contents and return learning resources will also be provided on Monday, June 15, 2020.
- The School is unable to accommodate requests for alternate times or designating proxies for Grad Package pick up.

Dear Kitsilano Grads and Families,
At the beginning of June, we communicated that while we could
not hold a Graduation Ceremony, but we would find a way to both recognize and
celebrate this significant milestone in your lives. All the while keeping
staff and students safe and healthy. We provided a preliminary idea of
what that recognition and celebration could look like. There was much
discussion and engagement between the School, Student, and Parent/Guardian
communities that resulted in changes to our plans to where we are now.
Please take the attached
document titled, “Graduation Recognition and Celebration” as the final plan.
We want to acknowledge and appreciate the thoughtfulness and
continual work to prepare for what is to come. We hope that this
recognition and celebration will be more than just a unique event, but a truly
special experience for all our Grads.
Please find attached information on the final plans for the
recognition and celebration of the Kitsilano Graduates of 2020. Note that
activities are spread over both this Friday and Monday.

Dear Kitsilano Families,
We are writing today to share the attached letter regarding the decision to cancel in-person graduation ceremonies and celebrations at secondary schools in Vancouver. We understand this is disappointing and are committed to working closely with our Staff Commencement Committee, Student Grad Council, and Parent Advisory Council to determine how to celebrate this milestone using the approach described in the letter from the VSB. We will be contacting students and families to share details about plans in the coming weeks.
Please note that we will be issuing a $150 refund of Grad Fees which were previously submitted. The $25 cost of the gown, certificate, and photos, etc. will be retained. With regards to the PAC sponsored Grad Prom, we will issue full refunds for tickets purchased previously.

Letter to Grade 12 Parents & Students_Continuity of Learning FAQ
April 7, 2020
Dear Grade 12 Kitsilano Families,
We recognize that these circumstances come with unique challenges for our graduating students. We also know how difficult it is to be at home, not being able to interact in person with your friends, and to be out of your regular routines, especially at this stage of your Grade 12 year. We want you to know that we are here to support in any way that we can. Please do not hesitate to reach out to either Ms. Mingo (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Ms. Bains (email@example.com) if you have any questions, concerns, or require support in any way.
Further to the communication sent to families on April 6th, we would like to follow up with specific questions and concerns pertaining to our Grade 12 students.
How will this situation impact Grade 12 students and graduation?
All Grade 12 students are expected to continue to participate in, engage with, and complete all of their courses to the best of their ability for the duration of the school year. Grade 12 students who were eligible and on track to graduate as of the published Trimester 2 Report Card will graduate provided they pass all their courses in June. Grade 12 students who were not on track to pass a course as of the published Trimester 2 Report Card will receive an "Incomplete/In Progress/I Report" from the Classroom Teacher outlining an action plan with specific opportunities and strategies to achieve success.
How will this situation impact assessment of learning, student progress and final grades?
Classroom assessment, grading schemes, etc. will be adjusted to focus on key content, curricular competencies, and core competencies. All students will receive a final mark in June based on work completed during Trimester 3 (March 9 to June 19). If your course mark is graded on a cumulative marking scheme, then the final mark will reflect accordingly.
Are scholarships and awards still being awarded for Grade 12 students?
Yes, we will be awarding our Internal School Scholarships and nominating students for the District Scholarships. Please continue to use the forms on the Kitsilano school website. Please note the new deadline and process for submitting scholarship applications is as follows:
o All application packages to be emailed to our Administrative Assistant, Ms. Francia Devilla (firstname.lastname@example.org) by 3 pm on Monday, May 24th.
o Students do not need to include School Transcripts; we will add them to your application package upon receipt of your package.
o For reference letters, the same 2 reference letters may be used for both the Internal School Scholarships and the District Scholarships.
Will student success be recognized and celebrated?
Scholarships will be awarded in June. Course Excellence Awards (formerly called Book Awards) will also be awarded in June. Honour Roll and Principal's List will be awarded for Trimester 2 and Final Report Cards. We miss our weekly KITS Card draws and will be working with Students' Council to figure out how to keep the KITS spirit alive from a distance.
How will my plans for post-secondary education be affected?
Individual post-secondary institutions have implemented their own processes to address this situation. It is best to contact the institution(s) directly with your specific questions.
What is the plan for Graduation events?
Graduation events scheduled for April have been postponed until further notice (e.g. Grad Breakfast). At this time, it is too early to confirm the status of Graduation events scheduled for May & June. As soon as we have information and clarity, we will share this information with you.
