School Policies and Procedures

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Students are expected to practice academic honesty and personal integrity by not participating in or encouraging plagiarism or cheating.

Should academic dishonesty occur the classroom teacher will develop a student success plan in collaboration with the student and their family.


ATTENDANCE POLICY

ATTENDANCE

The expectation is that all students will attend all of their classes.

ABSENCES

A. EXCUSED ABSENCES

  1. Policy:

    Absences will be excused for the following reasons only.

    a.     Illness.

    b.     Medical/dental appointments (which cannot be easily scheduled outside of school hours).

    c.     Other necessary appointments (at parent’s request).

    d.     Religious holidays and special ceremonies.

    e.     Bereavement/family emergency.

    f.      Authorized in-school service, with an administration slip.

    g.     Organized school activities with subject teacher’s permission.

2. Procedures:

a.     When a student is away, a parent/guardian needs to telephone the school receptionist (604-713-8961) each day of the absence. Upon returning to school, the student must bring a signed note from his/her parent or guardian that shows the student number, the date absent and the reason for the absence.

b.     The student will have the note signed by his/her subject teachers, whose classes were missed, and then take it to the school office where the receptionist will enter an excused absence in the student’s record.

c.     It is the student’s responsibility to make up any work missed during an absence.


ATTENDANCE SUPPORT

Research indicates that attendance is an important factor in the attendance success of students.  If a student displays a pattern of irregular attendance, the following actions will be taken.

  1. Parents will receive an automated message on days a student misses one or more classes.
  2. If a student has a repeated unexcused absences teachers will send interim reports and/or contact parents by telephone to discuss and develop a student success plan for the class.
  3. If absences continue, the counsellor will discuss the issue with the student and mutually agree on a plan for improvement.
  4. If the absences persist, the counsellor will request a meeting with the parent and student.
  5. If there is no improvement, the grade administrator meets with a parent and student to discuss a plan and possible options.

EXTENDED VACATIONS FOR STUDENTS

Extended vacations and/or vacations during school time are a parental decision. These absences can seriously impact a student’s achievement. Marks lost due to vacation can affect the final letter grade as evaluation of student learning is based on the work of the whole year.  Whenever possible, vacation time should be taken when school is not in session.

PUNCTUALITY

The expectation is that all students will arrive in class before the final bell.

LATES

It is the student's responsibility to determine and make up any work missed during the time they are late.

PUNCTUALITY SUPPORT

If a student has an irregular pattern of punctuality the following action will be taken:

  2. If tardiness continues, the counsellor will discuss the issue with the student and mutually agree on a plan for improvement.
  3. If the tardiness persists, the counsellor will request a meeting with the parent and student.
  4. If there is no improvement, the grade administrator meets with a parent and student to discuss a plan and possible options.
