Weekly Update from Beaconsfield - April 21, 2020

April 21, 2020

Dear Beaconsfield Parents/Guardians,

It is hard to believe that we are into week four of our Continuous Learning School Program. We realize that this new context is challenging for families. Depending on the age and stage of your child and your family's situation, learning is definitely taking a different shape in each home. It's not an easy time to be a parent and to be either out of work – or juggling working and having kids at home.

Whatever your family circumstance, thank you for engaging and connecting with Beaconsfield staff. Our thoughts are with you! Remember to acknowledge the work that you are doing as a parent and give yourself a 'pat on the back' every once and a while. We also recognize that many of our parents/caregivers are essential service workers and we applaud you for what you are doing for our community and our province.

Given that each family situation is different, Beaconsfield teachers are intentionally trying to balance the amount of work they are providing for their students. Please recall that the Ministry of Education has clear expectations about the amount of instruction and schoolwork teachers are providing (about 5 hours per week for a regular school week). Teachers are also expected to connect with students a minimum of once per week in terms of attendance. If you receive a call from a blocked or unknown number this may be a Beaconsfield staff member trying to reach you.

If you are finding the work too much or too little for your child or if you have concerns about your child's educational program, please directly contact your child's teacher via email or call the school and we will have the teacher contact you by telephone. If concerns continue despite efforts to communicate respectfully to your child's teacher, please contact me directly. Procedures for addressing educational concerns remain consistent right now, with the first step being to respectfully and confidentially contact the teacher with your concern.

In terms of assessment for learning, teachers will be expected to provide students with Year End Written Reports. More information about this will be provided to parents/guardians on this topic in the coming weeks. As you know, our teaching instruction right now is virtual and efforts are focused on reading and numeracy, so written reports will need to be adjusted to reflect this change.

Looking ahead, our final Professional Development Day for the school year is on Friday, May 15th. To be clear, no instruction will be provided by teachers on May 15th. VSB staff across our district will be focusing on Indigenous Education for this Professional Day. Also, please note that our school is closed on Monday, May 18th for our Victoria Day statutory holiday.

Please reach out to Beaconsfield staff as need be. We will make every effort to do what we can within the guidelines and expectations of our school district to support you and your child or children.

Sincerely,

Mrs. L. Morden

Principal
