Code of Conduct

At Carleton Elementary: We Care About Ourselves, We Care About Others and We Care About This Place.


Statement of Purpose:

Carleton’s Code of Conduct is designed to promote cooperation among children and encourage respect for others, their belongings, the buildings and community. Its purpose is also to ensure a safe and orderly environment in which students are able to learn and teachers are able to facilitate that learning without interference.

Carleton School promotes the values expressed in the BC Human Rights Code respecting the rights of all individuals in accordance with the law – prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation.

Rising Expectations:

 It is expected that as children mature and move through the grades they will

  • be given more responsibility for demonstrating acceptable  behaviour and self-discipline; consequences for not following the code of conduct will be appropriate for the age and maturity of student
  • act as appropriate role models
  • be given additional opportunities in the areas of student leadership and providing service to the school

We CARE about others and We CARE about this place.

Expectations apply to behaviour at school, during school-organized or sponsored activities, and behaviour beyond these times (including on-line behaviour ) that negatively impacts the safe, caring or orderly environment of the school and/or student learning.


1.  Caring about OURSELVES

  • Being on time for school
  • Having work and materials ready
  • Paying attention to personal hygiene

2.  Caring about OTHERS

  • Using kind words (to others or on the Internet) and say “Please” and “Thank you”
  • Being helpful,  honest and truthful
  • Talking and listening respectfully
  • Working quietly and cooperatively
  • Playing safely (e.g. waiting your turn, standing quietly in line, etc)

3.  Caring about THIS PLACE

  • Leaving things better than you found them
  • Letting school staff know about graffiti or equipment that needs repairing
  • Picking up garbage after ourselves and others
  • Recycling and using materials wisely

Always remember, you are representing CARLETON!


1.  Not caring about OURSELVES

  • Being late to school
  • Not having work and materials ready
  • Cheating

2.  Not caring about OTHERS

  • Using hurtful words (to others or on the Internet)
  • Lying
  • Talking back disrespectfully & being uncooperative
  • Disrupting others’ learning
  • Playing unsafely (e.g. pushing, hitting, kicking, etc)

3.  Not caring about THIS PLACE

  • Writing graffiti or marking and scratching surfaces
  • Destroying or losing equipment
  • Littering
  • Not recycling
  • Being noisy in the classroom, in the library or in the hallways

The school will treat seriously any behaviour or communication that discriminates based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation (prohibited grounds set out in the BC Human Rights Code)


1.  Initial, Minor Infractions…..

  • A discussion with an adult
  • Referral to classroom teacher
  • A “time out” for reflection

2.  Repeated Misbehaviour…..

  • Infraction recorded in office
  • Loss of privileges (e.g. time spent off the playground)
  • Removal of possession (e.g. skateboard, GameBoy, etc)
  • Counselor informed
  • Parents informed

3.  Serious Infractions/ Refusal to Change…..

  • Record of infraction added to student office file
  • Discussion with administration
  • Parents informed – behaviour plan developed
  • In school/ out of school suspension

Special considerations may apply to students with special needs if they are unable to comply.

  • Parents
  • Principal
  • District Staff
  • Vice Principal
  • Ministerial Agencies
  • Counselor
  • School Liaison Officer
  • Staff
