Div. 14 Community Project: I can build my community.
Dear Laurier families,
Today is Earth Day and we are SOARing at Laurier by wearing green and blue and turning off the classroom lights, to raise awareness about protecting the environment and living a more sustainable life. Please remember that Monday, April 25 is a professional development day and school is closed for students, while staff members are attending workshops.
'The Big One at Two' District-Wide Earthquake Drill Thursday, May 5
Every year in May, the Vancouver Board of Education runs a district-wide Earthquake drill. This year the drill for Vancouver schools will be held on Thursday, May 5th at 2:00 pm. At 2:00 pm, all students and staff will begin the practice in their classrooms, by going under their desks and counting to 60 in unison. After the count, everyone will proceed outside to the grass field, as we do during a Fire Drill. Once outside, we will set up our First Aid Station and Release Station. The Release Station is for coordinating the release of students to parents or guardians. In such an event, adults who are picking up students would check-in at the Release Station and sign-out the child that they are taking off of the school grounds. For the earthquake drill on May 5th, we will contact a couple of classes to practise the process of student parent reunification in case of real emergency. We are NOT asking all our parents to pick up their child at 2pm. The VSB has also implemented a radio communication process which will be used during this practice. Each school is equipped with a radio that can be used to communicate to the VSB Command Post with status information (i.e. injuries, structural damages, etc.) Schools are called one at a time to report their status. We must remain on the field until each school has completed their status reports. Once all schools have completed their status reports, students and staff may return to the building. Please find a document that describes the process of student parent reunification in case of real emergency at the following link: Student Reunification Handout For Parents.
Track and Field at Laurier
The track and field is starting in May for students Gr. 4-7. You will receive a parent consent letter with more information in the upcoming days. The district track and field takes place on June 2nd.
SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine Study - Pediatric Sub-study at BC Children’s Hospital
Do you want to learn how your child’s body responds to the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine? BC Children's Hospital is currently recruiting children between the ages 5-17, both with and without Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Their study will involve antibody testing (from your blood samples) before and after vaccination. The purpose of this study is to understand how vaccine dosing schedules and pre-existing antibodies impact your long-term response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. To participate or for more info, please email gloria.yu2@cw.bc.ca with the subject line, “SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine Study.”
