Our Behavior Expectations at Van Horne Elementary
These expectations apply to behavior at school, during school-organized or sponsored activities and behavior beyond these times (including on-line behaviour) that negatively impacts the safe, caring and orderly environment of the school, and /or student learning. Our goal is to develop confident, independent, well behaved school citizens. Teachers and other staff work hard with children to help them understand and adhere to behavior expectations.
Purpose of the Code of Conduct
Van Horne School promotes the values expressed in the BC Human Rights Code respecting the rights of all individuals in accordance with the law– prohibiting discrimination based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation—in respect of discriminatory publication and discrimination in accommodation, service and facility in the school environment. All children are treated as individuals with consideration for their personal circumstances and needs.
What does acceptable behavior look like?
Students should not arrive at school before 8:40 unless involved in an organized activity or teacher sponsored work time. Students should wait outside or in the basement for the buzzer to sound before proceeding to classes. We ask that parents do not escort their children to the classroom door as this adds to congestion in the hallways.
We encourage all students to go outside and play at recess if possible. On rainy days, students can stay in the basement play areas or in the undercover area.
All students in grades 4 - 7 should eat in one of the designated basement areas. At 12:20, any students not finished their lunch will be asked to move to the Primary lunch room.
Students should not eat in the front foyer or outdoors.
Primary students (grades K-3) eat in the lunchroom. After the month of September, parents are discouraged from staying with their children in the primary lunch room. There is not enough space for the extra bodies and if children are not able to eat independently, they should go home for lunch.
Students ask for permission to be dismissed to go outside to play. Large tubs are provided for most classes to store their lunch kits. These tubs are brought to classrooms at 1:00 by student monitors. Students who are waiting to take part in gym programs should line up in the basement hallway - not the gym foyer.
Students should go home promptly after school unless supervised by a parent, or involved in extracurricular teacher sponsored activities.
Staff will be on duty after school until 3:15 to assist with safety.
Parents are asked to establish a meeting place outside the school rather than waiting in the hallways prior to bell time. It is very difficult to dismiss the class when there is a crowd of adults outside the door.
Students are welcome to ride bikes to school but should lock them up on arrival. Wheeled transportation is not allowed on the playground for safety reasons.
Electronic games /pets are not allowed at school. These items are very expensive and cause upset for children if they go missing.
At all times, we ask that students enter or leave the school by the closest door.
Behaviors of Concern
The school will treat seriously:
-Behavior or communication that discriminates based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation.
-Disruptive behaviors which interfere with the learning of others
-Behaviors which disrespect others such as: name calling, swearing, homophobic or racist remarks.
-Unsafe behaviors such as: hitting, pushing or fighting (including “play fighting”), bullying, harassment or intimidation
-Illegal behaviors such as: possession/distribution of illegal or restricted substances or possession/use of weapons (including toys/replicas) .
Students who do not follow the Code of Conduct may be referred to the principal or vice principal.
We take a problem-solving approach with children, helping them to think of positive solutions to resolve conflicts.
Most children have the chance to make a mistake and try to solve it without the help of parents.
The severity and frequency of the unacceptable conduct, as well as the age and maturity of students are considered when determining appropriate consequences.
If the problem is serious or repeated, parents are contacted and asked to work with us to assist their child in making a behavior change. In some cases, the school will seek support from outside agencies.
Typical consequences for unacceptable behavior would include: a verbal or written apology, loss of play time (recess and/or lunch), exclusion from a special activity (e.g. field trip) or in extreme circumstances— suspension from school.
Consequences are applied to remind students of their commitment to positive behavior and to support other children’s understanding of our expectations.
