Braving the first day of Kindergarten

The start of a new school year can bring many emotions from excitement to nervousness, this was particularly true for kindergarten student, Jaylen Chow.

A bit reluctant at first, Jaylen braved the uncertainty of leaving his parents’ side and entered Trafalgar Elementary for the first time.

Taking in the new sights and sounds, Jaylen spotted the familiar face of Wyan Chen, an old friend. The pair had met at Trafalgar Out-Of-School-Care where they attended preschool together. As they entered the classroom holding hands, they were pleased to see that their names were beside each other. Jaylen’s family reached out to the principal before school started to request that the two boys be in the same classroom. School staff recognize entering kindergarten is a big change and try their best to accommodate the requests of families to ensure a smooth transition into school life.

In the classroom, Miss Dema, Jaylen’s teacher, gave him the opportunity to practice his fine motor skills by making furniture for the dinosaurs. As per the BC Curriculum, kindergarten is taught through play-based learning to develop engaged learners through a child’s natural desire to play.

Shortly after, Miss Dema asked everyone to gather in a circle to listen to a story. Then, she took the kindergarten class on a mini school tour to familiarize students with their new surroundings.

Given it’s their first-time entering school, all kindergarten classes in the District practice gradual entry. For Miss Dema’s class, this meant only half the class, 10 students, were present today, and the class had an early dismissal. Every day, students gradually stay longer until mid-September when students are better adjusted to the new school routine and can successfully transition to a full day of school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Upon pick up, Jaylen told his parents that he had an amazing day meeting new friends, reconnecting with old ones, exploring his classroom and school, as well as getting to know his teacher. See a video reel of Jaylen’s first day of kindergarten on the VSB’s Instagram channel.
