Vancouver City Council has passed changes to the fees around stopping violations which will double the fines for violations which occur in the vicinity of schools, 8am-5pm on school days. This was passed Dec. 3 2019 and will come into effect Jan 1, 2020. The Council report notes that "to support the City's Moving Towards Zero goals, (City) staff have identified a number of safety related parking offences, in particular those that impact vulnerable road users, where fine amounts should be increased to further discourage unsafe parking behaviour."
How does this affect the Van Tech Community?
Vancouver Technical's School Liaison Officer, Cst. Murphy and the Administration would like to remind parents that the curb lane on Broadway in front of the school is a bus lane and stopping is prohibited after 7 a.m. Also, there is section along Penticton Street, where stopping is prohibited during school hours. By-law officers have been issuing tickets at other schools and parents are receiving them in the mail. Walking to school is encouraged, perhaps dropping off nearby along East 10th or Slocan Street safely. Students may then walk to school. Safety for all is our priority.
