Windermere Lifeskills Champions

On October 12th, 2014, Windermere Life Skills students participated in the BC Taekwondo Cup, held at SFU. The tournament was hosted by DSA Taekwondo, a local taekwondo school run by Darius Andaya, whose three eldest children attend Windermere Secondary. Manuel (grade 11) and Dana Andaya (grade 12) volunteer twice a month to instruct Life Skills students in taekwondo, along with their father. Their younger brother Darryl (age 14), in Life Skills, and two of his classmates, Teresa Lowe (age 17) and Kenneth Tran (age 16), have been training to compete in the newly created “Challenger” division of the tournament. This division, created by Mr. Andaya, is intended to highlight the strengths and abilities of students who have special needs, particularly intellectual disabilities. The tournament opened with these students demonstrating taekwondo forms that they learned and practiced. Kenneth, Darryl and Teresa placed first, second and third respectively, inspiring the crowd of competitors. Life Skills students will continue to take lessons from DSA Taekwondo, with the hopes of building upon this great success!
