General Gordon Elementary School Renewal - January 2011

The renewal of General Gordon School is now in the “Project Definition” stage which involves developing and reviewing facility design options. The Prime Consultant team will be managed by Mark Ehman, DA Architects + Planners. The team includes structural, electrical, civil, mechanical and geotechnical engineers, sustainability consultant, quantity surveyor, landscape architect, heritage consultant and consultation facilitator. The Prime Consultant will lead a consultative planning and design process to explore school renewal options.

There will be three options studied as part of this process:

(1) Full Retention (seismic upgrade of existing structure, with a new gym addition)

(2) Partial seismic upgrade/partial replacement (seismic upgrade to a portion of the school with a new addition); and

(3) Replacement School (new school used as a Ministry base-case standard scenario).  

Each of the renewal options will examine seismic safety, building life cycle assessment, heritage, sustainability, project phasing and financial costing. The outcome of this process will lead to one preferred renewal school concept plan to be considered by the VBE in the fall of 2011. The submission of a Project Definition Report to the BC Ministry of Education is targeted for November 2011.
