DLG Weekly Newsletter
September 15 – 19, 2025
Dear DLG Families,
We’ve had a busy and exciting week at David Lloyd George Elementary! Thank you for your continued support and engagement. Below are some important updates and reminders for our school community.
🏗️ Seismic Project & Old School Removal
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend Wednesday’s PAC meeting where the deconstruction of the former DLG building was discussed. We were fortunate to be joined by the contractor and hazmat and air quality consultant. They shared an overview about the deconstruction process and took questions from parents. I was reassured about the safety measures in place to protect our school community. The process is consistent with many other school demolition projects in BC and in VSB, including most recently, at Hudson Elementary in Kitsilano.
During the meeting, we noted questions that arose from parents. If you were not able to join us and have a question about the demolition process, please do so using the form on the link below. The project team will compile answers for our community.
The form will be open until 7:00 am, Wednesday, September 17. I will aim to include an FAQ document with my regular newsletter shortly thereafter.
🧡 Professional Development Day – Friday, September 19
This Friday, September 19, is a Professional Development Day. There will be no school for students.
Our staff will be spending the day learning from and about our Indigenous host nation at the Musqueam Cultural Centre. This is a meaningful opportunity for us to deepen our understanding and strengthen our connection to the land and community we are privileged to learn and work on.
🔥 Fire Drill
On Friday, we held our first fire drill of the school year. All Vancouver public schools conduct six fire drills annually. Our students did an excellent job—calm, safe, and efficient. Within 2–3 minutes, everyone was outside, and attendance was completed shortly after. Well done, DLG!
📚 Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA)
As you may know, all students in Grade 4 and 7 in B.C. take a provincial assessment known as the Foundation Skills Assessment, or FSA. It measures foundational skills in literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy (math skills and problem solving). These standardized province-wide assessments provide valuable information about how students are doing and helps to identify areas that they may need additional support.
You may have heard differing views about the FSA. To support families with clear information, we are hosting a special live episode of our podcast, VSB: After the Bell. You’ll hear from experts in the field who will discuss what the FSA measures, how the assessment works, how results are used in schools, common concerns and misconceptions, as well as ways to help your child understand the assessment.
VSB After the Bell: Live

Please see the attached flyer for details about their after-school program.
🚗 Parking Reminder
Please do not park in the staff parking lot or in daycare-designated spots (unless your child attends daycare). EV charging spots are reserved for staff use only. Thank you for helping us keep our parking areas safe and accessible.
🗣️ Communicating with Teachers
If your child shares something that you’re unsure about or concerned with, please reach out to their teacher. Our staff values strong school-home partnerships and welcomes open communication.
In the coming weeks, some teachers will be hosting open houses and class-specific info sessions. Some may also send regular updates via email—please keep an eye on your inbox!
