📰 DLG Weekly Update
January 19 – 23
Hello David Lloyd George Friends and Families,
We’re looking forward to another busy and exciting week at DLG! Here’s what’s coming up and a few highlights from last week.
🌟 Black Excellence Day – January 15
Last Friday, we marked Black Excellence Day during our school assembly. Along with a short tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., students learned about one of Vancouver’s most beloved historical figures — Joe Fortes.
Joe Fortes was Vancouver’s first lifeguard and taught thousands of people how to swim, leaving a lasting legacy in our city. If your family would like to learn more, the National Film Board of Canada has produced a short film about his life. Here is the link: https://www.nfb.ca/film/joe/
🌱 Grounds Clean-Up
A big thank you to Division 9 for helping keep our school grounds clean! We are fortunate to have such a beautiful school and neighbourhood, and we appreciate our students taking pride in them.
🎶 Choir
Our Celebration Choir will be practicing Tuesday at recess. The popularity of this extracurricular group really shows how much our community values music. Thank you to all the students, teachers, and parents who continue to support our choir program.
🏀 Basketball (all games at 330 pm)
- Monday: Junior Boys will be hosting Shaughnessy Elementary
- Wednesday: Senior Boys will be hosting Laurier
- Thursday: Senior Girls will be playing an away game at Van Horne Elementary
Best of luck to all of our athletes!
📚🥣 Books for Breakfast
The library will be open for Books for Breakfast, where parents are invited to read with their children and enjoy breakfast together.
A heartfelt thank you to Ms. Heap, Ms. Louie, and Ms. Clements for hosting. Please note that children must be accompanied by an adult.
🎭 Performance – Peter Pan
On Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., Dufflebag Theatre will be visiting DLG to perform Peter Pan.
Thank you to families for paying the performance fees included in the September school fees — your support makes special experiences like this possible for our students.
🚪DPAC Newsletter -- Please see attached newsletter. Thank you to parent Jennifer Durham for attending the meeting
Friday: Hold and Secure Drill
This Friday, we will be practicing a Hold and Secure Drill. Each year, schools are required to conduct several safety drills, including fire, earthquake, hold and secure, and shelter in place.
A Hold and Secure is used when there may be a concern outside the building (e.g., a human or animal issue, or a fire/police/ambulance incident in the neighbourhood). During the drill:
- Learning inside the school continues as normal
- Exterior doors are closed and blinds are drawn where possible
- Students outside are brought indoors
- If there were an environmental concern (e.g., a nearby fire), ventilation drawing air from outside would be turned off
We expect that many students may not even notice that the drill is taking place.
🌍 Our Diversity Calendar
This week, we also recognize families observing:
- Shevat – January 19
- Birthday of Guru Gobindh Singh – January 20
For more upcoming observances, please see the attached VSB Diversity Calendar.
For regular school events we have also attached our year-at-a-glance calendar.
💙 Have a Great Week!
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We’re grateful to be part of such a caring and engaged community.
Have a wonderful week ahead!
