Salmon in the Classroom
In BC, the Grade 4 science curriculum focuses on learning about animals and their habitats, life cycles, and adaptations.
The Grade 4s at Tillicum have the privilege of learning up close about the life of a Salmon.
In January, we receive Salmon eggs from the Ministry of Fisheries. For the next two months, we care for and hatch the eggs in our own classroom Salmon aquarium, learning all about the needs and habitat of local Salmon species.
After the eggs have hatched and matured for a few weeks, the class releases the developing Salmon back to the river to allow them to carry on the rest of their life cycle. This program is a hands on learning experience for our students, but it also shows the students how they can play a part in protecting and preserving a local species along with its habitat.
