On May 22, 2025, the Italian Cultural Centre was full of students, families, friends and VSB staff for the Grade 7 Moving Forward Ceremony.
The event celebrated Indigenous students as they move from elementary to secondary school, marking an important moment in their education journey. The room was filled with cheers and excitement as students walked across the stage, supported by family and friends.
The day celebrated more than what they’ve achieved. It also welcomed the the bright future ahead of them.
Representatives from xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) spoke to the Grade 7 students, congratulating them and thanking the many people who helped them on their continuing learning journeys.
VSB superintendent Helen McGregor also addressed the students, sharing how important it is to make schools a place where everyone feels they belong. She said students should see their cultures and identities reflected and respected at school, and explained it is her role, and the role of every adult in the room, to make that happen.
“We do that by working together, by listening, by learning every day. And then, using what we learn,” McGregor said. “You play a very big role in helping us do that. Learning alongside you is such a gift!”
VSB Board chair Victoria Jung encouraged students to follow their passions and curiosity.
“Most importantly, believe in yourself and what you can do. Today shows that you can do anything!” Jung said.
One by one, students walked across the stage, received their certificates and stopped for a photo capturing this precious moment in time. They left the stage not as elementary students, but soon-to-be Grade 8 students. Now, ready to take on new challenges and opportunities!
