Assessment and Reporting

Educational Program

The curriculum taught to students is prescribed by the BC Ministry of Education. There are curricular documents for each of the following subjects: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Arts Education, Career education, Physical and Health Education, Applied Design Skills and Technologies, and Core French (for Grades 5-7.) As well, students learn and self- evaluate themselves on the Core Competencies which include: Communication, Creative Thinking, Critical Thinking, Positive Personal and Cultural Identity, Personal Awareness and Responsibility and Social Responsibility.

The curriculum identifies “Big Ideas” and “Curricular Competencies” at various grade levels. These outcomes serve as guidelines of what is to be taught to the majority of students. The Ministry of Education has also established Performance Standards for students in reading, writing, and numeracy. Parents who wish to, may obtain more information on all of the above by visiting the Ministry of Education website- https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca.

 Reporting Student Progress

In accordance with the BC Ministry of Education reporting guidelines, the school will be participating in the Communicating Student Learning initiative outlined on the VSB website http://i3.vsb.bc.ca. Parents will receive two formal reports on student progress two times during the school year. The formal reports communicate how students are doing with respect to the learning outcomes established by the Ministry of Education.

There are also three informal reports for ongoing communication, which take the form of Goal- setting conferences, Student-led conferences, Celebrations of Learning, or more informal parent/ teacher communications such as teacher blogs and emails.
