Pink Shirt Day @Laurier!

Dear Laurier Families,

We are gradually coming to the end of February. With many activities and events at our school this month, we have been able to continue to encourage our SOARing students to focus on what matters the most, being supportive, open-minded, awesome and respectful. In addition to our outstanding staff, who make sure that learning never stops at Laurier, there are some individuals that I would like to acknowledge in this e-News. Many thanks to Ms. Murphy and Ms. Boucher for working non-stop with our SOAR committee and organize an election to name our Laurier Eagle and lead our Pink Shirt and SOAR Fun day at Laurier. Thank you to our Laurier PAC for their effort to order and distribute pink Laurier shirts in a timely fashion. Thank you to Ms. Tan for leading the Food Bank Project at our school. We are getting very close to our goal of $500, and last but not least, much gratitude to our community for making the book drive at Laurier a success! Many children will benefit from these books to develop their literacy skills and love for reading before starting Kindergarten.

Pink Shirt Day at Laurier!

Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, February 22nd gave us an opportunity to focus on the importance of diversity, acceptance and inclusion. During our SOAR assembly, in order to acknowledge this day, we shared the story behind Pink Shirt Day and how it began, we talked about the International Mother Language Day, we revealed the name of the Eagle, we watched the SOAR slide show and we ended the assembly with a Pink Shirt Day Dance led by Ms. Cacapit. On Pink Shirt Day, everyone was invited to share a message of kindness on a pink post-it note. Our SOAR Committee students made a big eagle poster. The pink messages were posted to the eagle to help give our eagle it's very own pink shirt of kindness.

...And Here Is Argie!

The SOAR Committee was hard at work running a democratic vote for the students and staff of Laurier to name our eagle. Voting took place at recess and lunch this week, and the chosen name was revealed at our Pink Shirt Day assembly on Wednesday, February 22nd. The SOAR Committee students checked student names off class lists to ensure each person could vote only once. Voters printed the number that matched their name vote on their ballot, and fed it through the eagle's beak. It was awesome seeing all the students turn out to vote. And yes, our Eagle is now called Argie, which in Greek language means 'All Seeing"! How wonderful to remember that at Laurier we are all aware and see with our hearts and souls!

Movie Night - Puss in Boots: The last wish

Date:  Thursday March 2, 2023 | Doors open: 5:30 pm. | Movie starts: 6 pm.

Sir Wilfrid Laurier Elementary PAC invites Laurier students and their families to come together to watch a movie in the gym. We will be showing Puss in Boots: The last wish. Admission is free, although a 2$ donation is suggested to cover for movie license and other expenses. We will have some snacks, juices and pizza for sale on a first come first serve basis. We will place mats on the floor for everyone to sit. Feel free to bring extra cushions, blankets or your favourite stuffy for extra comfort. Please note: this is not a drop off event, adults must accompany their children.  As always, these events only happen with your help. We still have many volunteering openings vacant, and we can't run the event without sufficient help. Please consider volunteering: Movie Night - volunteersignup.org/FKWR4.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at school. I wish you a safe and restful weekend.

Sincerely,

Armin Samiei | Principal
