We Continue to SOAR At Laurier!

Dear Laurier Families,

I would like to thank our Kindergarten families for helping us with the Big One @2 Earthquake drill reunification on Thursday, May 4th. These drills help our school community to practise and assess our strengths and needs to ensure the safety of our students and staff during real emergencies. Please see the attached Emergency Reunification Plan that explains steps you need to take during an emergency to pick up your child from school.

Bye April! Hello May!

April was a busy month at Laurier! Here is a highlight of our extra-curricular activities in April: Biking sessions for Gr. 5/6/7, Young Actor Project for primary students, Vancouver Opera in Schools, Scholastic Book Fair, Student-Led-Conferences, April SOAR Assembly. Our teachers continued to organize field trips and extra-curricular activities to support student learning. Some examples are: Burnaby Village, Vancouver Symphony, Empathy Workshop. Our staff participated in lunch and learn sessions on April 4th and 17th working on Novel Studies and Universal Design for Learning. We also had our Immunization Clinic for our Gr. K and 6 students and practised our emergency skills during a fire drill.

Thank you to our PAC executives for leading the PAC meeting on April 18 and for their ongoing support.

Please check below the Upcoming Dates for events and activities in May!

Black History Matters Presentations @Laurier

All of our K-7 students will participate in these presentations on Monday, May 8th and Tuesday, May 9th. These presentations are designed for different age groups. Created by a theatre artist, Black History Matters is a fully researched and resourced program that works with students to create a truthful awareness of Black Canadians that is needed in our schools on an ongoing basis by using the arts to inspire and educate. Evoking the Sankofa bird and its meaning we look to the past to inform our future. Students are asked to question, comment and connect with the material that is presented and see how it interconnects with the world around them. The presentations are full of fun facts and allow the classroom to continue the conversation after the event.

Laurier PAC News

-Hot Lunch Volunteers Needed: The hot lunch program at Laurier needs support from you! If you have any time to spare on any day at lunchtime, we are always looking for volunteers to ensure food is delivered safe and warm to our students. This is a fun way to spend some time at the school and help PAC’s biggest fundraiser. Please email us at laurier.hotlunch@gmail.com or visit  volunteersignup.org/FDFYR to sign up to help.

-Sports Day T-shirt Sale Closes Soon!
Sports day returns this year on May 19th! We still have a good number of t-shirts in sports day colours for $15.00 each. To order, login to munchalunch.com and select the fundraiser. Ordering closes at end of day Monday, May 8th. Distribution will take place later in the week. For more info - visit laurierpac.ca events and fundraising page, or email us at laurier.pac@gmail.com. We believe that any Laurier student who would like a t-shirt should have one and the cost of a shirt should not prevent a student from having one - please email us in this regard.
