SOARing continues at Laurier!

Dear Laurier Community,

I hope you all had a restful Thanksgiving long weekend. Hard to believe it is already mid-October! The Laurier Eagles are all settled into their classroom and school routines and they continue to learn and SOAR!

Laurier SOARs!

We are thrilled to have an awesome SOAR Committee working together this year.  We have 2 volunteer students from each intermediate division who are representing their own class and a primary class.  The SOAR Committee meets on Wednesdays at lunch to plan our SOAR goals and celebrations for the year.  We also tally how many SOAR tickets we have earned as a school toward our SOAR goals.

This year, our SOAR goal for June is to have earned 4,000 SOAR tickets.  We will celebrate with SOARing spirit and awesome fun days each time we reach 1,000 SOAR tickets.  It is the middle of October, and we have already recorded 594 SOAR tickets!  Way to SOAR together, Laurier!

Many thanks to our Teacher Leaders, Ms. Murphy, Ms. Sprintzios and Ms. Boucher for working with our SOAR Committee and all of our staff members for encouraging our students to SOAR every day!

School Plan Goals

In addition to the curricular learning that happens in classrooms and schools, each school is also focussing on some specific school-wide goals, that they achieve through collaboration and professional development. You can read about our three-year plan at the following link: Laurier School Plan Goals.

Our two goals for this school year are:

1)To develop critical thinking skills in our students, guided by the principles of Formative Assessment, to support student self-assessment
2) To increase knowledge, acceptance, empathy, awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal histories, traditions, cultures and contributions among all students

PAC News

-Saleema Noon Body Science: It was great to see so many families online at the Saleema Noon Body Science Parent Session. If you missed it, here is a link to a Parent Resource Handout.

-Memorial Kudo Board: It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Risha Golby this past summer.  Ms. Golby was principal at Laurier from 2015 to 2018 and showed us how to SOAR.  Her love of our students showed in all she did and she brought out the best in all of us.  She is deeply missed. We are hosting a Kudo board for members of the community to share their memories of Ms. Golby.  When it is complete, we will print a book of the memories for Ms. Golby’s family so they, and especially her daughters, will have the memories too.  Please add your photos and memories to:

https://www.kudoboard.com/boards/GcZxitbe

The possibility of a memorial friendship bench has been raised and we are interested in any other ideas the community may have.  If you have a suggestion or would like to help, please email laurier.pac@gmail.com

-Friendship List Reminder: Our PAC Friendship List Form is also now available on the PAC website. The PAC Friendship list is a printed directory of contact info for Laurier parents and guardians who opt-in to sharing their info. Find out more and add your family’s contact info at this Google Survey link  or you can download and fill out a PDF version from the PAC website and return it to the school with your children.

-October PAC Meeting: Our October meeting is coming up, and will take place over Zoom (Please check the link in the school email) on Tuesday October 26th - an agenda will be available on our website's pac-meetings page a week before the meeting. Your opinion is important, and we want to hear from you!
