Late French Immersion: Gr 6-7

The Vancouver School Board's Late French Immersion program accepts 10 and 11 year olds who have successfully completed grade 5.

In grade 6, 100% of the BC curriculum is taught in French (emphasis is on oral French).

In grade 7, English Language Arts are reintroduced while other subjects continue to be taught in French.

Students in grade 5 may apply for admission to grade 6 Late French Immersion. Applicants are welcome to apply directly to any of the 3 Elementary schools offering Late French Immersion for the 2022/2023 school year. After the January 31st application closing day, all those who applied will have their names entered into a draw to determine who will be offered available seats at each location. Families will then be contacted regarding offers for placement at each site for which their name is drawn.

Please note that due to the nature and pace of the program, students will not be admitted to the Late French Immersion program after the second week of instruction.

French Immersion

The Vancouver School Board's Early French Immersion program accepts 5 and 6-year-olds at the beginning of their formal schooling. This program is intended for non-French speaking students who wish to develop a high-level of proficiency in both official languages.

The BC curriculum is instructed in French from kindergarten to the end of Grade 3. From Grades 4-7, 50 to 80% of the BC curriculum is taught in French.

Although the common point of entry to Early French Immersion is kindergarten, Grade 1 students may enter up to September 30th if space is available.

Students enrolled in French Immersion study the same BC curriculum as students in the English language program, but the language of instruction and communication is French.
