World teachers’ day: Celebrating the people who make learning possible
A teacher sees when a student needs more encouragement. They find another way to explain a difficult concept, create opportunities for students to discover new interests and help young people see possibilities they may not yet see for themselves.
These moments happen every day in classrooms across Vancouver. On world teachers’ day today, VSB celebrates the teachers behind them and the important role they play in supporting student learning, well-being and belonging.
Teaching can take many forms, from building strong foundations in literacy and numeracy to creating hands-on learning experiences, encouraging creativity and helping students develop the confidence to take on something new.
Across VSB, teachers have also received provincial and national recognition for the impact they make in their classrooms and school communities.
At Templeton Secondary, teacher Mike Hengeveld has been recognized nationally for his work in STEM education and project-based learning. Learn more about STEM learning at Templeton and Hengeveld’s approach to teaching.
At Britannia Secondary, Trevor Stokes and the Streetfront alternative program team received a Premier’s Award for Excellence in Education for their collaborative approach to supporting students. Read more about the Streetfront alternative program and its impact on students.
These stories are just two examples of the many ways teachers across VSB create meaningful learning experiences and support students in reaching their potential.
Extending recognition to students
The impact teachers have on students can continue long after they leave the classroom.
Each year, VSB awards two $2,500 teacher recognition scholarships to graduating students. The scholarships recognize students who have contributed positively to their school communities and maintained a strong academic record.
The scholarships also create an opportunity to reflect on the important role teachers play in students’ educational journeys and celebrate the relationships that help students learn, grow and succeed.
On world teachers’ day, we recognize all VSB teachers for the knowledge, care and commitment they bring to their classrooms and school communities every day.
To our teachers, thank you for helping students learn, grow and discover what is possible.
