VSB Career Programs is offering two courses for students to explore and prepare for careers in the health sector. These courses are taught at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) Burnaby Campus and run at various times of year. Students can apply for one or both of the two course options below.

Please note that students must be in grades 11 or 12 to apply for this program. Applications are due by December 1st.

Healthcare Horizons: Career Exploration

A first-of-its-kind, online, healthcare career exploration course for BC high school students. This competency-based course introduces students in grades 11 and 12 to diverse healthcare career pathways while building foundational knowledge of Canada's healthcare system and essential workplace skills. Through guided self-assessment, exploration of five healthcare career clusters, and interactive learning activities, students develop career clarity alongside core competencies in patient-centered care, professionalism, communication, clinical safety, health information literacy, and healthcare technology, culminating in a personalized education and career action plan. The course concludes with a one-day immersive experience at BCIT's Health Sciences Centre in Burnaby where students will tour state-of-the-art facilities, participate in hands-on activities, and connect with instructors and current students.

Preparation for Nursing Education

This course is for students interested in exploring and pursuing a career in nursing. This course aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to nursing through a combination of theoretical and practical learning opportunities. Students will be introduced to the profession of nursing and the healthcare environment while developing the academic skills that are necessary for post-secondary success. This course provides an introduction to professionalism and communication in healthcare, medical terminology, nursing care, the healthcare environment, and quality and safety. It also introduces concepts of respect, diversity, and inclusivity. This 5-day course is delivered in person at BCIT's Burnaby Campus, offering hands-on experience in a lab/simulation setting.

Course Details

These courses are offered in online, in-person, and hybrid models. Students must be committed to attending all classes, completing asynchronous online learning, and fully participating in simulation labs and practical tasks.

Pathway Pre-requisites

Students intending on pursuing a health sector career are strongly advised to research and discuss the specific pre-requisite courses that could be required by post-secondary institutions.
