Staff Perspective: A Letter to the Grade 7 Indigenous Grads

| Categories: Events & Celebrations, Indigenous
Moving Forward Ceremony

taansi, (Hello) Grade 7 students,

My name is David Delorme, I am the District Principal for the Indigenous Education department. I am the son of David Delorme Sr. and Yvette Delaire. I am Métis/Cree and French Settler ancestry from Treaty 6 Territory in Saskatchewan. I am honoured to be a visitor on these territories since 2005.

Finishing Grade 7 marks a significant moment in our journey together. As we bid farewell to our remarkable seventh graders, we also celebrate their accomplishments, perseverance, and the bright futures that await them as they transition into high school.

Remember that the path ahead may have its challenges but know that you possess the strength and determination to overcome any obstacle that comes your way. Draw strength from your ancestors, and let your culture be your guiding light. Embrace every opportunity to learn, grow, and make a positive impact on the world around you.

As you step into the eighth grade, I urge you to continue to embrace your identity, celebrate your story, and advocate for Indigenous voices everywhere. Your journey is not just about personal success, but also about paving the way for future generations and ensuring that their voices are heard, and their rights are respected.

I have no doubt that each one of you has the potential to achieve greatness and make a lasting difference in the world. So, as you bid farewell to seventh grade and prepare to embark on the next leg of your academic journey, do so with confidence, courage, and pride in who you are and where you come from.

Congratulations, students, on all that you have accomplished, and best wishes for a bright and successful future in eighth grade and beyond. Thank you to your families and to the educators that have lifted you up and guided you down this path. We are immensely proud of you, and we cannot wait to see the incredible things you will achieve.

maarsi, (thank-you)

David Delorme
District Principal for Indigenous Education
