Library / Learning Commons

Welcome to the Captain Cook Elementary School Library Learning Commons!

My name is Mr. Liang and I am the Teacher-Librarian for Captain Cook Elementary.

I am excited to be back at school and to be your child’s teacher-librarian for this school year!  We will use resources and activities in and through the Library Learning Commons to become lifelong learners, readers, and leaders.  Our library collection contains a wide variety of wonderful books for readers of all levels.  New titles are added throughout the school year.   The library is open throughout the school day.  I look forward to connecting and working with all the students in the school.

Each class will have some dedicated time to visit the library each week to borrow books from our school library collection.  If possible, please read with your child either with books from our school library or from the public library.  Library books are usually due back after 1 week but students can hold on to the books if they have longer chapter books.  Teachers usually have a library book bin in the classroom, so students can bring back their books any day, or they can come to the library to return their books.

If you have any questions, you can contact me at nliang@vsb.bc.ca

Taking Care of our School Library Books

  1. Keep the books in safe place.
  2. Return the books on-time (after 1 week).
  3. Do not eat or drink while reading library books.
  4. Wash and dry your hands before reading the library books.
  5. Keep books away from pets and younger children as they may not know how to take care of the books.
  6. Never write or draw in a library book.
  7. Always use a bookmark where appropriate.
  8. If going on a trip, please leave the books at home.
  9. If the library book has been damaged, please bring it back to me and I will try to repair it.
  10. If you lose the books or it is damaged while in your care, you may need to pay to replace it.  Please come talk to me, or send me an email so we can discuss about it.

Checking Your Library Account

We encourage all students and parents/guardians of younger students to check their school library accounts on a regular basis. This helps students keep track of their library books.

By checking your account, you can find out:

  • Which and how many books you have checked out.
  • When your books are due.
  • If you have lost or overdue books.
  • In addition, you can create and save lists of books that interest you.

To access your account, follow these steps:

  1. Go to https://library.vsb.bc.ca.
  2. Find "Captain James Cook Elementary" and click on it.
  3. Click on the "Login" button.
  4. Enter your VSB student number and password.  If you are having difficulty with your password please visit https://studentpass.vsb.bc.ca/.  (Student PEN # is required).
  5. Once you're signed in, you can search our catalogue using keyword, title, author, series, etc.

Databases, eBooks and Videos

The Vancouver School District provides all students with access to a digital library filled with databases, ebooks and video services. (A database is an organized collection of information and an ebook is an electronic book).

Students can find information to do research and complete assignments, read and interact with ebooks and watch educational videos.

Library Monitors

Our Library Monitors, made up of students, contribute their time to help our library run smoothly.  They check-in books, shelve books, process new books to be added to the collection, and keep the library clean and tidy.  I really appreciate the help these library monitors do for the school library!
